Mia’s first pumpkin patch last year was a fun experience for all of us that’s why we decided to make it as part of our family culture and an annual tradition. She had seen giant pumpkins for the first time and played in the stacks of hay and corn kernels at Larry’s Produce in Fairfield.

We are so happy to bring her there once again this year for her 2nd pumpkin patch, this time with other kids from Nurse Family Partnership!

We were invited by Nurse Family Partnership to Pumpkin Patch this year, they set-up a place exclusive for the family who are enrolled in the program. They have a little activity area for kids to do some art work with the pumpkins and a food stand for every family to share with.

    Pumpkin Patch

It was nice to see other families who were with their little kids having fun and enjoying each other’s company.

Indeed it was a perfect day! The farm has the perfect vibe for pumpkin patch with all the varieties of pumpkins in different sizes and colors. We all had fun especially our sweet dearie, Mia had a blast! She played with other little kids and enjoyed every activity with them.

    Kids Pumpkin Patch Activities

Activities were the same as last year except for the pyramid of hay with pumpkins display right at the center of the farm. This year they have different arrangements, it was pretty easy for kids to play and run around and for parents to take pictures of their little ones.

     1. Giant Pyramid of Hay and Pumpkins

    pumpkin patch at Laryy's produce

    pumpkin patch at Laryy's produce

How cool is this pyramid?! It was for sure the center of attraction of the farm, the main spot for everyone’s perfect pumpkin photoshoot! Mia stood happily and full of excitement as she waved her hands for pictures, she was so amazed by its height and the pumpkins sitting on top of it.

This was absolutely a great idea since it captures the interest of more families to come back again for the next pumpkin patch!

     2. Ride in An Old Farm Tractors

    pumpkin patch at Laryy's produce

    pumpkin patch at Laryy's produce

These old farm rides were only for displays, each was designed for pumpkin patch. We’re not really sure if they’re still working but they have stacks of hay and pumpkin displays perfect for kids pictorials!

The Nurse Partnership arranged a tractor ride for all the families who attended the activity, it went around the corn field and all the way back to the pumpkin farm. We seated at the first seat next to the driver and as we moved along Mia pointed out the big wheels of the tractor and says “wow” as it made it sound.

     3. Run Around the Corn Maze

    pumpkin patch at Laryy's produce

    pumpkin patch at Laryy's produce

This was one of the places that families love at Larry’s farm, a perfect place to chase their little one in the corn maze! Mia didn’t have the chance to play here last year since she was very young at that time but this year she had fun!

At first she was hesitant but when her Papi (Dad) pretended to be a dinosaur and chased her in the maze, she runs as fast as she could. It was a fun play time in the corn field!

     4. Corn Kernel Play Area

corn kernel area in larrys produce

pumpkin patch at Laryy's produce Another favorite spot for little kids is the corn kernel area where you can find small play tractors. Most of the little ones from nurse family partnership stayed here longer than any other activities. Kids loved swimming on top of the grains and hide their little toes and legs underneath, just what Mia did.

Each of the little ones took turns to play and ride in the small tractors. Mia waited for her turn and when she took her chance she didn’t want to let go of it until she saw the slide!

    5. Climb the Hay and Slide on a Big Tube

    pumpkin patch at Laryy's produce

pumpkin patch at Laryy's produceThis slide was not as slippery as an ordinary slide, it was a customized slide made from a big tube on top of hay stacks. Kids climbed the hay to reach the top and slid down to the corn kernel area.

Since our sweet dearie is so fascinated with slides at this age, this was her most favorite out of all the activities. After she had gone once, she asked for more!

    6. Colors of Different Types of Pumpkins

    pumpkins in Larrys produce

Another pumpkin patch at Laryy's produce

We visited 2 farms this year for Mia’s Pumpkin Patch, here at Larry’s and at Clayton Valley Pumpkin Farm and Christmas Trees. I made two separate posts for each since we had a lot of pictures! But I would really recommend Larry’s Produce than the other since they have a lot fresh options in an affordable price and most of their activities are free!

This year was another wholesome family pumpkin patch experience at Larry’s Produce! This place never disappoints us, we’ll surely visit again next year!

Do you have the same tradition like us? If so where did you celebrate pumpkin patch this year?

  • 3 Simple Ways You Can Do To Relieve Stress During Pregnancy

3 Simple Ways You Can Do To Relieve Stress During Pregnancy

Another change is coming in your life thus affecting everything from your body to your environment. When you’re pregnant, all these changes seemed to be very overwhelming and it’s normal to feel a little stressed out once in awhile.

Here are some of the ways you can do to help relieve stress during pregnancy.

Simple Ways to Relieve Stress During Pregnancy

    1. Pause and Meditate

Pause a moment and have self alone time. Think about all the life stressors you’re experiencing in the past months or years. I know it’s a heavy task but through this, you can start finding ways and solutions on what to do in a more calmly and relaxed manner.

Have you had experienced one of these life stressors?

    [icon_box icon_position=”left”]

    • Previous pregnancy
    • Arguments with someone
    • Unemployment
    • Health Issues
    • Marriage
    • Loss of a family member
    • Financial problems
    • Issues with in-laws
    • Divorce
    • Occasions like Holiday Season

    [/icon_box]

    [icon_box icon_position=”left”]

    • Mortgage or loans
    • New family members
    • New environment
    • Change in your living condition
    • Issues with your partner/husband/wife
    • Family gatherings
    • Law violations
    • Great personal success
    • Work responsibility
    • Children

    [/icon_box]

There are more life stressors not listed here that you might have experienced. I know its exhausting, it’s okay to take a break, pause and take your time to relax and rest.

Focus on yourself and your growing baby. When you’re rested and relaxed, your way of thinking is much better.

    2. Understanding Your Emotions

Ask yourself what are the things that make you happy, sad, angry, worried or troubled? These emotions doesn’t only affect you but also your baby.

I made myself a list last year about my emotions and how I cope with it everyday. You can try this method and I hope it can help you the way it helped me relieve my stress during pregnancy.

What are the things that makes me happy?

Above all that I could think of, I’m at my happiest when we traveland eat out with the whole family.

Ways I do to feel happier?

I take a lot of photos and videos about our trip and write about it.

How it affects baby when I’m happy?

I remembered before that every time I felt so much happiness, my baby just can’t stop moving around my tummy. She felt very strong and seemed to be happy too.

What are the things that makes me sad?

felt sadness every time I had arguments with my husband and misunderstanding with other family members.

Ways I do to feel less sad?

I would talk to them and open up my emotions, this way we try to understand each other’s point of view.

How it affects baby when I’m sad?

When I’m sad I don’t really eat, I tend to forget about my hunger and that was definitely a big mistake.

What are the things that makes me angry?

When I was pregnant I was very sensitive, little things that seemed wrong to me was a big issue. One of those was whenever I felt treated different and unfairly.

Ways I do to feel less angry?

Most of the time, I walk away, take a deep breath and cry my anger out.

How it affects baby when I’m angry?

Anger is a very heavy emotion, it’s exhausting for you and your baby. Whenever I’m angry before, my bump hardens and I couldn’t breath well. And after I cried all my anger out I felt all worn out so does my baby inside me.

What are the things that makes me worried or troubled?

I feel worried whenever my husband is away and he has to travel to another country without us. I also feel troubled whenever I don’t talk to my Mom (who is in the Philippines) for long.

Ways I do to feel less worried?

Whenever I feel worried, I always try to communicate with the people around me like my friends and other members of the family.

How it affects baby when I’m worried?

I get very emotional when I’m worried and it’s not good for baby too. Just like anger, it’s a heavy emotion and exhausting feeling.

Be honest of how you’re feeling and don’t be afraid to share it to someone especially to your partner. Talking to someone who can listen and understand your emotions will surely help you feel better. Finding support that you need will be easier if you know how to open up your mind and your emotions.

Remember, laughter is always the best medicine so laugh more often, it takes away stress and helps improve your mood and temperament.

    [icon_box icon_position=”left”]

    • Difficulty in sleeping
    • Shortness of breath
    • Aches and pains
    • Feeling weak
    • Fatigue or dizziness
    • Forgetting things
    • Worry

    [/icon_box]

    [icon_box icon_position=”left”]

    • Smoking
    • Breaking something
    • Make trouble or make a fight
    • Cry
    • Hurt someone
    • Walk away
    • Get angry

    [/icon_box]

There are ways to find more energy in simple things. Little things can make a big difference if you could free yourself from stress. Here is a list of activities you might want to try.

    [icon_box icon_position=”left”]

    • Chat with friends

Remember Mommies, be strong for your baby, take good care of yourself as you are taking care of another strong baby inside you. You can do this!

  • How Can You be The Best Parent For Your Toddler

How Can You be The Best Parent For Your Toddler

Your responsible parenting is the most essential part of your child’s growth and development. We all want to be the best parents for our toddler but how?

Toddler stage is the most challenging yet most exciting stage for parents. At this stage, baby begins to explore the world and take risks while learning.

Here are some of the tips and advice you can do with your family including baby.

These are very helpful among first time parents, like us at first we struggled on what to do but these simple ways made a big impact on our parenting journey towards our toddler.

We hope it can do the same for you and your family as well.

    Knowing your Child

Think about this, if your child as a toddler can write you a letter what would he/she say to you? Would he/she ask more of “Why’s?” or no questions at all just gratitude and “I love you’s”.

Through this ask yourself, how well do you know your child?

Remember how many times have you had fun time together, what are his/her favorite game to play with you, what are his/her favorite food, how do you take care of him/her and more importantly what are the ways you do to keep him/her safe and healthy.

    Being a Parent

Being a Mom or a Dad to a growing toddler is not easy, you should have the patience, kindness and other good qualities like fun, playful, calm, thoughtful, loving, flexible and consistent.

Among all of these qualities, which are you best at?

You might have some other good qualities which you might discover along the way of your parenting journey. You’ll know that you’re showing good once you see your little one is growing happy and healthy.

As what the famous saying goes, “As kids grow, they might forget what you said but won’t forget how you made them feel”. Toddlers like your child are observant and what they see and hear from you, they do!

So be a good model for him/her, be the best reflection of how you want him/her to be when they grow into an adult.

    Looking Back…

It’s also good to look back on your parenting journey, what have you learned so far being a mom or a dad. Looking back will make you realize your capabilities to be the best parent you can be.

As a first time mommy, I could say that so far my parenting journey is a smooth sailing learning. I learn almost everyday with my toddler.

I never thought I could have so much patience and extend it way beyond limits.

I never thought I could take care of a new human being and raise her well into a joyful blessed kid.

I never thought teaching is one of the skills I would be passionate about since I want my baby to learn as much as possible and as young as she is.

Like us, these kind of realizations will motivate and inspire you to do more than what you have done before for your child.

    Thinking Ahead…

It’s about your dreams for your child, how do you see him/her in the future. Spend more time with your child and explore new ways on how to develop his/her skills and abilities.

It is essential for you to spend more quality time with your growing child since this is the stage where he/she begins to form the foundation of his/her learnings as well as building his/her character.

    Know your Family Strength

Like individuals, all families have strengths. These are the things that you do well as a family. The power of working together to be happy and healthy in good and bad times. Do you know what your family strengths are?

As parents, we build this strengths for our family whether it’s about health, safety, life plans for the future, relationships or involvement in the community.

    Build a Strong Family Ties

A strong family ties means providing love and comfort within all the members of the family. This is how you communicate and build your relationship towards one another.

It also means support of each members in any life’s circumstances.

Strong ties begins in communication, how well do you communicate when someone is frustrated or upset.

Indeed, listening is the key to understanding. Listen in full attention about each stories and understand their emotions.

Do some new bonding activities that your family will surely enjoy especially your little one. This helps to keep your family happy.

    Create and Nurture Family Culture

Creating family customs and nurturing special cultural practices such as traits are good for your toddler. These special customs are learned by your child from older family members and this helps build your toddler’s character.

It would also be nice if your child learns about the history of your family. This helps them understand their roots and be proud of it.

  • Food for Thought: A Story of Kindness

Food for Thought: A Story of Kindness

Food for Thought: A Story of Kindness

Our food for thought this weekend is a short story of inspiration, how a small act of kindness can make an impact in one’s life.

I remember the chilly wind, the kind that makes you stretch out your sweater sleeves to cover the rest of your hands. I believe it was December because I recall seeing people outside their houses decorating for Christmas.

With my backpack on my back, I was riding my bike on my way to school, my hands freezing to the point where I could not feel the tip of my fingers. I could feel the wind hitting my face as I pedaled faster. My hands were gone, I did not know exactly what was holding the handles of the bike or whatever force moved it to the right direction. My nose and my ears were the next parts of my body to disappear. I was breathing fast but every time I inhaled, it felt like drowning. I clutched the handles hard to feel it in my grip as the houses on both sides of the street slid past me. The road was long, and bumpy but I knew better to just look straight ahead.

I was listening to music through my earphones coming from my music player, I would play the same songs every time and I knew that it took me twelve songs to get to school. I was counting how many had played since I left home when I heard a faint sound, I quickly pulled the earphones out of my ear and let my right foot drag the pavement to a sudden halt.

“Hey” I heard it loud and clear this time. I looked around and spotted an old woman approaching me. I was very shy then and I could barely speak English, so I was startled and nervous. I had started to wonder why I had stopped in the first place. As the lady got closer, I started to wonder what I had done wrong. “Hey, little girl, wait there. Just a second” she was trying to walk as fast as she could, she was an old lady, she was wearing white slippers and a robe. I noticed that she was holding something else, but I could not tell what it was.

She bent down to catch her breath and when she looked up, she held out her hand, “this is for you.” I was puzzled but I took it, it was a pair of gloves the color of the morning sky. “I see you every morning and I have been meaning to give you this.” I managed to mutter out a “thank you,” the old lady nodded and walked back to her house. I slid my hands in the gloves and immediately I felt as my icy rock hands came back to life.

From that day on, I wore my gloves to keep my hands warm and every time I passed by the house of the old lady I would smile. I was grateful to her, she did more than to warm my hands, she warmed my heart.

There are so many kind people, angels that are always willing to help others without giving it a second thought. Like the lady that gave me her umbrella because she saw me soaked with rain as I was walking home from school. Even though I shook my head and told her that she needed the umbrella too. After that day I tried to remember what she looked like, but I would not remember. I knew she was tall because it was hard to look at her face through the rain.

Or that time a man knocked on my dad’s car window and gave him the money that he had earned for that day working at a grocery and liquor store so that my dad could get a hotel room. My dad tells us that story all the time, it was when he had just arrived in the United States and could not afford to rent a place so he slept in his car and one day a man knocked on his window and told him “this is my earning for the whole day but you need it more than I do.”

In this world filled with havoc, kindness flashes a bright light of hope. I have come a long way and through my journey generous people have been there for me, they lent me a helping hand and stood me on my feet when I was on the ground helpless. I am eternally grateful for them, and the lessons they taught me. I can show my gratitude by passing it on.

  • Goat Rock Beach in Sonoma Coast State Park

Goat Rock Beach in Sonoma Coast State Park

Indeed one of the most scenic place in California is Goat Rock Beach. One of California’s attractions that you should visit if you’re a traveler or a group of family seeking a wonderful kind of adventure.

    SONOMA COAST STATE PARK

Sonoma Coast State Park, cliffs and huge natural sea rocks going to Goat Rock Beach.
Sonoma Coast SP spans 17 miles from Bodega Head to Vista Trail which is located approximately 4 miles north of Jenner. Beachcombers, fishermen, sunbathers and picnickers can access the beach from more than a dozen points along coast Highway 1.”

Another day of unexpected getaway happened last weekend and it was an unforgettable experience in the serenity of nature. The beauty of this place is mesmerizing, the scenic views of the headlands, the long sand beach below it, the cliffs, the rock formations, the strong big waves from the ocean, and the wild life. It is such a perfect place to relax and breath after a long week.

We didn’t know what to expect before our arrival but when we got there, it was beyond what we thought it would be.

Sonoma Coast State Park is a rocky coastline with craggy cliffs bordering the pacific ocean located in Sonoma County at Bodega Bay, California. It features natural harbor and rock arches in rounded cliffs which divide many long sandy beach below its peninsula. The beaches are easily accessible by the public since it has a lot of entrance points and parking lots.

Beautiful scenery at Goat Rock Beach

We chose to go to Goat Rock State Beach, quite distance away from other beaches. On our way, we passed through a lot of gift shops, souvenir shops and restaurants. We saw most travelers have their R.V’s and camping trucks and some have their surf boards and camping gears on top of their cars.

As we went through the rocky landscape, the astonishing scenery was breathtaking, it boost our excitement to get to the beach and see the water up close.

    GOAT ROCK STATE BEACH

Small colorful pebbles washed off the shore of Goat Rock Beach.
At Goat Rock State Beach located near the Russian River, home of harbor seal and some migrating whales.

It’s a long wide sandy beach located near the mouth of the Russian river, where you can see great rock arches and natural cove. The beach has a fine grayish to black sand and the rocks were composed of small pebbles in different shades. Upon entry, we already saw public restrooms and picnic tables along side the parking lot and small walking path towards the sand going to the beach.

We arrived late in the afternoon almost sunset, it was a perfect time since the temperature was not that hot and not so cold neither, just a super cool refreshing ocean breeze.

    ACTIVITIES

We enjoyed playing beach volleyball, playing in the sand and running away from the huge waves. Some people were walking along the shoreline and some were just sitting and sun bathing. You can also try paragliding and kite flying!

Paragliding activity at Goat Rock Beach.

But the most exciting thing that we saw in our visit was the whale and the seal! Unexpectedly they appeared in the wavy ocean just in front of the beach, although it was in a distant, we still recognized that it was a whale because of its size and because it was blowing water. And the seal came very close to the shore, it was swimming with the waves.

I didn’t get a good picture of the seal that was swimming in the ocean since the waves were too strong that it covered the seal so fast and it disappeared even before I made myself ready for the shot.

Anyway during some time of the day according to few articles I’ve read, you can really see a lot of them offshore, it will be just the timing if you get there on that specific time of the day.

    THINGS TO KNOW!

1.Although Goat Rock Beach has the gorgeous views of beautiful long sand and relaxing surfing waves, it is not advisable to swim here since the waves are too strong and the sea floor drops deep and fast.

    2. Dogs are not allowed, you can take your dog in the nearby beach, on Blind beach which is off the south parking lot of Goat Rock.

    3. Fishing is also prohibited since Goat Rock beach is part of Russian River State Marine Conservation Area (SMRCA).

    4. When watching seals or sea lions, authorities advised public to stay 50 yards away from it especially during between the months of March to August which is the pupping season.

    5. Please be very careful with the water, always stay above the highest water marks in the sand. The waves are very dangerous so be cautious especially if you have little kids.

Our sweet Mia having fun on the shore of Goat Rock Beach.

Another well spent weekend! You should never miss to visit this place once you are in California, it is such a wonderful adventure to the magical beauty of nature!

  • Ilsan Lake Park: A Family Layover Destination in South Korea

Ilsan Lake Park: A Family Layover Destination in South Korea

    The beautiful Ilsan Park Garden

After our 2 weeks vacation in the Philippines, it was time for us to go back home in U.S but before we reached California, we decided to take a connecting flight from Philippines to Korea and layover for 15 hours before our next flight to California.

An exciting journey to South Korea begins when we first landed at Incheon Internatiol Airport at 4:00 in the morning. We are a family of three with a toddler so a long layover to a new place is perfect for another getaway! Being a spontaneous traveler as we are, we didn’t know first hand where to go since we haven’t really got a time to search for any destinations.

One of our mistakes when we got there was not able to look for the right destinations on the web and not able to find the right resources about touring options in Korea. It was only after all our fun journey at Ilsan Lake when we discovered that at the airport, they have a transit tour desk where they offer free transit tours including guided tours around popular destinations in Seoul.

Even though we didn’t know about it, somehow we managed to find the perfect spot for us to enjoy our time in South Korea and that was in Goyang City at Ilsan Lake Park. We took a taxi and in about an hour we decided to drop ourselves off in a restaurant for breakfast.

    Ilsan Goyang, South Korea

Located in the north, South Korea, Goyang City is one of the largest city in Seoul capital area. It is a city in Gyeonggi Province where the most popular flower festival takes place every early April.

We arrived in the city early morning, the weather was a little cold so we had to take a warm soup and coffee for breakfast. As it gets to noon, the temperature went from cool to warm.

Strolling around Ilsan, Goyang City after a nice breakfast!

Most of the stores and restaurants were still closed and there were not a lot of people around. We walked through places where we could ask someone for directions going to Ilsan Lake park. We went to ask a taxi driver but like most of the locals, he doesn’t speak and understand English so it was a struggle for us to communicate. Fortunately, there was one guy who curiously asked us where we were heading, he spoke a little English and just pointed us where to go and that the park was only walking distance away.

    Ilsan Lake Park

Ilsan lake park is a city park located in Janhang-dong, Ilsan-gu District in Goyang City. It is a wide beautiful park of greenery of trees and rainbows of flowers in the middle of the urban area. Ilsan lake is considered to be the largest man-made lake in Asia covering an area of 300,000 sq. meters. A wide area for family to enjoy picnic and do some activities like running, walking and biking. It’s free admission only pay for parking fees.

We walked few miles away from the place of the restaurant to the park. It was very convenient for a family like us to just walk and stroll our baby around the city of Ilsan. Since it was only about 7 a.m, we arrived at the park with no hustle.

Peaceful atmosphere in Ilsan Lake Park
Discover some amazing art works while strolling around the park.
Huge water fountain in the middle of the wide Ilsan Park.

    Perfect for Relaxation

The park has a wide area of paved pathway and refreshing environment. You can enjoy the scenery of colorful flowers under the trees, sit on benches and relax in small huts and feel the cool wind from the lake.

We got our one luggage and 2 backpacks with us plus the stroller of our little one, it was not much but somehow it made us tired of walking. We took ourselves to one of the benches close to the lake. Sat and relaxed ourselves with the cooling wind blowing from the trees while we watched some people who were with their families or group of friends chatting at each other, also enjoying themselves with the beautiful view.

Fountains in the wide lake of Ilsan.
    Windmill Tower, Ilsan Lake Park

Inside the tower, we found an automatic blood pressure machine in which you have to put your arm in it and wait for one minute to get your b.p measured.

And one more interesting thing to see inside was the writings on the walls, people have written their names and everything else around the walls. Some were messages and some were random Korean writings.

Since we were already there and it was our first time in Korea, we decided to write our names there too just for fun and for the memories as well.

    A memory to keep.

Right Place for Kids Fun & Learning

What a brilliant idea to have a mini book shelf like this in a park. Kids can do reading, learning and playing at the same time! This easily attracts kids, with those curious minds, with no doubt they would run towards it and try to grab one book.

Our little one, who loved books, excitedly runs towards the shelf and tried to reach one but unfortunately the books were written in Korean. We couldn’t understand a thing since the writings are very different.

Mini Book Shelf, tiny library at Ilsan Park.
Mia loved the beautiful flowers, she pointed at each one and tried to pronounce the colors of each.

    Strolling and Exercise

A good place for exercise like walking, running, jogging and cycling. Ilsan park is most recommended among families and big groups who wanted to spend quality time together while doing some fun activities for exercise.

Its a perfect spot for us after a long travel and also just the right place to be to wait for our next flight. We would have gone to a lot more places if we chose to take the tour that they offer in the airport but we didn’t regret anything since our little one really enjoyed walking and running around the park.

Few Koreans exercising early morning at Ilsan Park.

    WHAT MORE TO SEE?

    The Beautiful Rose Garden

Still inside the park in few miles away, visit the colorful rose garden. It is in full bloom during this month of May till June. Roses are in arches and in beautiful landscape.

I got more excited when I saw the garden from afar for I have not known that there was a rose garden in this park. It was quite a dream for me to see a wide garden full of different kinds of roses since I’m really a fan of the colors of flowers in gardens as such. The colors were amazing, indeed it was such a nice refreshing scenery.

The lady monument standing proud as the center piece of the rose garden.
Our sweet Mia fell asleep after getting tired of playing.

    The Wooden Water Turbine

On the side of the wood turbine is a small landscaped falls.

Walk few more miles to reach the wood water turbine. There are small cottages on the side if you want to sit, lay or relax. Such a refreshing spot to rest, with a soothing sound of the running water from the falls and the wooden turbine.

When we got here, there were some group of old ladies who were enjoying their lunch in one of the cottages and one who was doing some meditation on the other cottage.

Ilsan Lake Park was indeed a perfect getaway for us and also just the right place to spend our time before taking our next flight. A long layover in one foreign country like Korea means a journey to explore little bit of the place appreciate it with nature all at the same time. It was definitely worth the travel and adventure!

  • Spring Annual Tradition: Easter Egg Hunt 2019

Spring Annual Tradition: Easter Egg Hunt 2019

    Happy Easter!

Since it’s spring, it’s Easter season again which means Easter bunnies are out in the garden and time for egg hunting as well!

Today we are celebrating Easter Sunday, the most important day in Christian spring celebration, wherein Jesus Christ has resurrected from the dead three days after he was crucified. In Christian belief, the egg symbolizes the resurrection of Christ while egg hunting symbolizes the hunt of Jesus from the tomb. This I believe is the beginning of the tradition among Christian families every Easter Sunday.

It’s a fun tradition that I started to do with my small family, to join a group or a small community for egg hunting. This year, we went to join the Golden Goal Soccer Club for their 5th Annual Easter Celebration in Blue Rock Springs Park here in Vallejo. This year’s egg hunt was more fun and more exciting for us, especially for my daughter since she was able to walk and run around with the other kids to pick up eggs and also join in some kiddie games.

We arrived in the park before noon. When we got there, people were already chatting in benches and some were preparing the food. We laid our blanket in the grass and made ourselves comfortable while waiting for the food.

It was windy but a perfect sunny day. Indeed, it was a busy day for the park, there were many people gathered in groups, some were birthday parties and some were big families having picnics. And there were also other groups who were Egg hunting.

As we were waiting for lunch, we got some cupcakes and juice that were served on the table for snack.

While waiting for the hotdogs and hamburgers to get ready, Mia chose to walk around with her basket and looked anywhere for eggs or bunnies.

    The Egg Hunter

Our sweet dearie looking for the Easter bunny and getting ready to hunt for eggs! Yay!

So sunny that she needed to wear sunglasses to look for the Easter bunny.

“Now where is that Easter bunny? Hmmm, I must find him now that I can clearly see!” -Mia

Before the actual egg hunting, an Easter bunny mascot arrived to entertain the kids. Everyone got excited, run towards the bunny and gathered around to take photographs.

“There you are! I found you Easter bunny! High five!

For everyone to get photos with the bunny, we all lined up and waited for our turns. Mia for the first time saw an Easter bunny and she was not scared at all. She was so delighted and was so happy to have seen one!

    FUN ACTIVITIES

A series of fun activities were greatly enjoyed after eating lunch. Each games was divided among toddlers, kids and adults. And prices such as colored eggs with candies were given to the ones who won the game.

    1. Sack Hop

1st Batch were the little kids; getting ready to hop with their colored cartoon sacks
2nd Batch were the big kids; they were more than the little ones.
    3rd Batch were the adults

    2. Water Balloon

This game was what Mia enjoyed the most since it involved water and balloon. Two of her favorite things to play with. She doesn’t even want to move away the water balloon bucket!

    3. Raffle

The raffle draw came last after all the games. Tickets were sold for $5 and almost 5 prices were won!
Mia and I getting ready for the actual egg hunt! Look who’s excited to hunt!

    3. Egg Hunting

First in line were the toddlers and Mia was the very first one to pick the Easter eggs yay!
“I think we had enough Papi, look our basket is full!” -Mia
“Now it’s time to count them, wow these are colorful eggs!” -Mia

Our Easter Sunday was indeed a fun full experience! Each and everyone had a really great time especially the kids! Once again, it was another milestone unlock for my sweet little one. How about how did you celebrate Easter? Have you had a fun Easter egg hunt too? Please share your story on the comments!

  • 10 Things You Have to Know Before Driving with Doordash: A Dasher’s Review

10 Things You Have to Know Before Driving with Doordash: A Dasher’s Review

Two months ago, I decided to drive for Doordash in Vallejo. Despite of the negative reviews I read about this app online, I still wanted to give it a try and experience it myself. I wanted to know if I can really earn decent amount of extra money in my spare time just doing food deliveries.

    WHAT IS DOORDASH?

It is a food delivery app. just like Grubhub, Ubereats and Postmates. It’s another way for drivers to make extra money just by picking up food in restaurants and deliver them in the doorsteps of the customers. It’s been well advertised in social media and it became an on demand food delivery service among students and employees. If you are looking for a side hustle or a side job and you are willing to make money through driving, will you take a shot becoming a doordash driver?

Well, here are some of the things YOU NEED TO KNOW on becoming a “dasher” (doordash driver). These are all based on my experience after being a registered dasher for months. These are all based on my opinions and thoughts to give you ideas about what to consider before driving with doordash.

10 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE DRIVING WITH DOORDASH

    1. Check if doordash is available in your country or location. Doordash is mostly available across United States and you can check your location in their official website.
    2. Most dasher’s only earn an average minimum of $6 per delivery or per trip. And in an hour, dasher’s only make an average of 1 or 2 deliveries depending on the demand or how busy the area is.
    3. As a driver, you are responsible for your own expenses including gas, car maintenance, insurance etc.
    4. Some deliveries will require you to place the order in the restaurant and pay the food yourself  using the red card that doordash will provide. It’s an additional work and longer waiting time.
    5. The insulated bag that doordash provides will be delivered separately after you received the doordash red card. It is not necessary to bring the bag at all times since for me, it’s more convenient without it. However, as a responsible dasher, it is recommended to have the food inside the bag so that it will remain hot and fresh upon delivery.
    6. There are high demand of orders during rainy days so might as well take advantage of it! You might receive 2 orders at the same time.
    7. Make sure to have your phone all the time and have your charger as well in your car. There will be times where you have to call or text the customer if you have any questions about their food or if you are delivering in apartments where it’s hard to find their address or any issues you may have during delivery.
    8. Don’t always go to places where the doordash app said to be “hotspot or red zone” because based on my experience, order opportunities in these places are very slow, it might take you an hour to receive just one. Stay and wait to places where there’s a lot of restaurants around.
    9. Dash during peak hours like lunch and dinner. Doordash often offers additional tip per deliveries mostly between 11-1 pm lunch time and 4:30-8:00 p.m dinner time. But bare in mind about the conditions or terms on how you’ll be entitled for that additional tip. According to doordash, you must accept 80 % of the delivery opportunities assigned during the said time period.
    10. Learn the art of declining orders. Always check for the total mileage you will consume, the kind of restaurant and how much will you earn in a particular delivery before accepting an order. Consider each of these things so you will know which one’s to accept or to deny. You also have to be aware of your ratings, if you keep on denying orders, your acceptance rate will be affected drastically and it’s hard to gained it back.

    PROS

    • The advantage of driving with doordash is that you are you’re own boss and you get to choose your own schedule.
    • The application is easy and the app is easy to understand and easy to use as well.
    • Compared to other delivery apps like postmates, in doordash you don’t have to worry about the customer’s receipt, you just have to make sure that you checked all the orders in the app.
    • Also, the delivery fee that doordash asked among its customers all goes to the driver, this way dasher’s earn a minimum of $6 per delivery excluding extra tips.
    • Another pro about being a dasher is that you can bring a family member with you while you’re doing the deliveries. One can be the driver and the other one can pick up to the restaurants and drop off the food to the customers.

    CONS

    • One disadvantage of being a dasher would be not earning enough despite all the expenses that you make from  your car mileage, gas, maintenance and etc. It can’t be a full time work since the earning is too low.
    • Another con is the waiting time for orders, it’s based on luck how busy a day gets. Sometimes you have to park and wait for a long time just for a single order to come.
    • There will be times where you receive an order that has not been placed or paid  at the restaurant yet, so this will be an added work for you and additional waiting time. In my experience, this only happens more often in fast food restaurants. Most of the orders I received was just pick up and drop off.
    • Sometimes you have to drive long mileage just to complete the delivery and get that extra tip during peak hours.
    • Doordash customer’s service is not a lot of help and slow to respond. There will be instances where customer’s ask to drop off their orders in a different address but then you won’t be able to complete the delivery unless you go to the address they stated on the app. Since doordash app monitors your location through gps, to complete the delivery, you have to contact customer’s support and explain that you delivered in a different location.

Above all, it was a good experience and even though it doesn’t pay much, doordash is a decent way to earn extra income. If you could do other delivery app such as Grubhub, Ubereats or Postmates, 2 at the same time you will probably earn more per hour. Good luck on your adventures! Happy dashing!

  • The Way Out: An Analytical Essay from the Short Story “La Puerta”

The Way Out: An Analytical Essay from the Short Story “La Puerta”

It is tough to live in a small village where there are not enough resources to grow, where a job is never enough to sustain a family. Feeling as though the door to opportunity keeps closing. That is exactly what happens in the short story La Puerta by Jose Antonio Burciaga. The author presents the story of the protagonist Sinesio, a man who seeks a better life for his family but like many families in other countries, he is crippled by the lack of education or job opportunities in his country. As the man of the house, he is loaded with a burden that he must do whatever it takes to build a better future for his wife and three kids. Men from his village are forced to leave their families behind searching for better jobs that can help them provide for their families. Sinesio dreads the thought that one day he might have to do the same, that is why he sacrifices his few pesos to buy lottery tickets in hopes that one day he becomes the lucky winner.

The author uses irony, imagery and symbolism such as the lottery, the door and the rainy weather with thunders to illustrates the plot and the story’s theme which is:

“How necessity leads one to take desperate measures to find prosperity.”

The setting takes place in a poor village in Mexico around 1992. Immediately the author gives a short overview of what a small village looks like. Using imagery, he describes it as “[a] busy avenida…the ramshackle colonia where children played in the meandering pathways that would soon turn into a nosy arroyo of rushing water” (133) this detailed description creates a picture of the place and allows the reader to become engaged in the story. The author uses the third person point of view to give the reader a better understanding of the characters’ emotions and how they react to the events in the story. One perfect example of this is when Sinesio comes home and sits quietly on the table trying to figure out a way out of his misery and the author lets the audience know how his wife Faustina, a dynamic character, reacted towards that behavior “Sinesio’s silent arrival always angered Faustina so she glared back.” (133). Also, the third person point of view gives the author the freedom to develop his style and he does this using dialect where he mentions Spanish words such as “nopal” “autobus” “barrio.” Such style enables the reader to grasp the essential theme of the story.  Moreover, it is the bases in which the author approaches the plot.

Sinesio is fighting hard, he wants to free himself and his family from an oppressed situation, a circumstance under his country’s poor economic condition. It is fair to say that the character faces a Man vs. circumstance external dilemma, where in this case the antagonist of the story is Poverty. Given these points, the author proves these elements through the use of symbolism. For instance, La Puerta or the door whose broken window is shattered and patched symbolized Sensio’s struggle to open a door to opportunity. Every day when Sinesio comes home tired from work and knocks on the door of their shack indicates that his job at the mattress factory is an attempt to fetch money to provide for his family but it is never enough. The rising action of the story takes place when Sinesio decides to leave to go to the United States upon reading a letter from his brother who describes the foreign country as the “country of abundance,” a place that villagers aim for in search for freedom and opportunity. Sinesio reassures himself and his family that he will be absent for only a year. With an ache in her heart Faustina tells him that it is for the best and says “‘Necessity knows no frontiers’” (133) she says this as she notices rain dripping from a hole on the broken door which symbolizes their poor economic situation and their need for a desperate change.

The use of irony emphasizes the character’s external dilemma. “‘That miserable, mattress factory will never pay you enough to eat with, we can’t even afford the mattresses you make!’” (133). It is ironic the fact that they cannot afford to buy the mattresses that he makes. The factory that Sinesio works in is supposed to pay him enough to make a living but instead, it becomes another reason for him to leave his family behind. On his way home from his last day of work, he overhears two men talking on the bus; they were talking about someone who had won the lottery but that they had not collected the prize. Upon hearing this, Sinesio remembers that he had bought a lottery ticket two weeks before. He would daydreaming about winning the lottery and ironically, on this day, it was the least thing he had thought of. Sinesio went from being happy to sad when he suddenly realized that he might have lost the lottery ticket and would never know if it had been the winning one. This turning of event is no surprise for the reader because the author foreshadowed it in the beginning of the story when Faustina glares at the lottery ticket and scolds Sinesio for buying it because she believed that he would never win.

The author sets the tone of the story with a stormy weather. The thunder creates a gloomy mood full of tension and anxiety as Sinasio runs home under the rain and once again knocks on the door. It is the author’s way of indicating that the ticket is the door to the life that Sinesio has been longing for. The author’s intentions become clearer when Faustina swings open the door. But getting out of poverty is not as easy as winning the lottery and claiming the price, for this reason, when Sinasio gets inside his house and asks Faustina where she kept the ticket, she has trouble remembering where she had placed it. Both characters cannot find the lottery ticket anywhere in the house until there is a loud thunderstorm that reminds Faustina that she had patched the ticket to cover the hole on the door to stop the rain from coming in. They compare the winning numbers from the ones in the news paper and they could not believe their eyes; it was the winning ticket. The impact of this realization is the climax of the story “His heart pounded afraid it was all a mistake, a joke” (135). Sinesio and Faustina were standing staring unbelievably at the gateway to a better life, the ticket to the future. However, when it came time to peel the ticket of the door, the ticket would not budge, their fingers slipped of off it again and again. The author took this opportunity to demonstrate to the reader that the way out would simply not be easy.

It is important to notice the author’s use of dialog during the falling action when the two characters discuss a solution to their problem. Faustina suggests that they go to the pharmacy to see if they could find something that would unglue the ticket. Sinesio thinks that her suggestion is absurd, the deadline for the lottery is at eight and time is running out. They try all possible ways to get the ticket off the door, but nothing works. Frustrated, Sinesio turns his anger towards Faustina. He accuses her of having little faith, for never believing that someday they might win. Although Sinesio has reasons to be angry at Faustina, he was overreacting. Faustina disregarded the lottery ticket because she deemed it unreliable. She wanted her husband to remain realistic, she knew that their chance of winning was very little. After they had tried everything, Sinesio is left with no choice but to break the door, the author described this event with imagery “he pushed the door out into the downpour and swung it back into the house, cracking the molding and the inside hinges” (135). Not sure if he will make it on time, Sinesio lifts the door, places in over his shoulders and makes his way down to the lottery office.

    REFLECTION

In the short story La Puerta Jose Antonio Burciaga exposed the dilemma of the protagonist Sinesio who got stuck in a situation that he did not want to be in. The author’s writing technique where he incorporated the use of literary devices such as imagery, irony and symbolism helped develop an intriguing story that captivates readers. The author does not deliver a resolution to the story. He leaves it to the reader to determine whether Sinesio makes it on time to claims his prize or becomes disillusioned and goes back to his old life. The ending of the story indicates that there is hope and the author wanted the reader to understand that even though there were many obstacles that prevented Sinesio from getting the lottery ticket, he is still fighting. Sinesio is a hardworking man that would do anything to offer his family with a better life. It becomes hard for Sinesio to keep his life under control, as his quest to escape poverty keeps slipping out of his hands which provides the reader with an important lesson of how one should never stop believing.

I hope you enjoyed reading this as much as you enjoyed my previous essay!
