Taking A Stand: An Essay from the Short Story “The Day It Happened”

“Some people prefer to bury themselves in sorrow, succumb to the pain of hurled rocks that life throws at them, but others stand up and fight back.”

In the short story, The Day it Happened, author Rosario Morales encompasses an issue that many women in different  communities encounter in their lives which is domestic violence. Morales unveils the story of a couple who had been married for six months and were already in a pattern of countless abusive fights. She crafts the story of the protagonist Josie, a character who takes a stand for herself and decides to abandon her marriage for her own wellbeing and for the baby growing in her womb. The story’s, plot, settings, point of view, style, and dilemma convince the reader to absorb the essential theme of the story which is that one should never tolerate domestic abuse.

In the exposition, the twelve-year-old girl narrates in third person the story of the protagonist Josie as she tries to break free from her husband, Ramon, who is the antagonist. The setting of the story is in an apartment building around 1992 somewhere in New York city. The plot begins with the background story where the narrator details that, at first, Josie would not admit there was anything wrong with her marriage; she was in denial. In her mind, she had married the ideal man, and she justified his bad behavior and bad temper by saying “He can’t help himself. He doesn’t mean it.” (Morales 75). The author deliberately mentions through her simple writing style that there were other men in the apartment building who were aggressive to their wives as well. For instance, “Joe who liked to bully his wife” or “Tito who talked all the time about ‘wearing the pants in the family’.” (75). This portrays that other women sympathized with Josie, but they felt powerless to help because they could not even help themselves. This is an example of the internal dilemma that women face.

Women in abusive relationships feel embarrassed and retain that struggle and pain within themselves until they start to believe that there is nothing wrong with their marriage. Through the background story, the author manages to show to the reader that Josie was not the only one going through a tough marriage but that there were others and many of those women had gathered to witness a life changing event that was about to happen when Josie decides to pack up her suitcase to leave and wait in the taxi to break the news to Ramon.

It was indeed the gathering of the onlookers that gave a hint to the audience the rising action of the story, “We streamed out the door into the small crowd that had gathered by now” (75).  It was a spectacle to the neighbors, most likely because nothing like this had happened before. No woman had had the courage to swallow their fear and confront a man that treated them as if they were an item of possession. At five o’clock, Ramon strolls down the street, he avoids the crowd and keeps his eyes fixed on his shoes as he walks. He does not look up until he hears Josie call his name from the crowd.

The climax begins when everyone notices as Ramon’s expression changes when he hurls himself at Josie and grabs her leg; how he suddenly looked so vulnerable as if all the strength that made him strike like a lion before, had transferred to the “cute,” “small” and “plump” woman that was now standing before him. She was no longer afraid to look straight into his eyes, she was no longer a victim of a lost battle but rather a survivor. She spoke with confidence and told him that she was leaving him. Ramon, upon realizing Josie’s intentions burst out into tears and asks for forgiveness. Josie probably felt a tinge of sadness for him and she probably could have taken his apology and forgive him, but he had done enough damage. Men like Ramon do not change, and Josie knew that.

The story descends with the falling action. Ramon reluctantly lets go of Josie’s leg as Olga, the neighbor, emerges from the crowd and kneels down with him to convince him to let go because there was nothing for him to do. Josie was not the little girl that he knew, the girl that he constantly bullied and took advantage of.  Josie finally is liberated from Ramon’s grasp something that symbolizes her bravery and strength. She was not a fragile woman anymore, rather she was a responsible mother who had to put her child first. This leads to the resolution, where Josie gets in the taxi and tells the driver to drive off. The women in the apartment building surly felt different because they had seen Josie walk away from her abuser. They know it can be done. Or if anything else, the men probably treated their women a little better because they knew that like Josie they could walk away. An act of bravery from a woman is all that needed to happen for other women to reassure themselves that they are not alone in this fight. They understood that they were not the problem; just as Ramon told Josie when she was leaving “you are young, you do not understand” (76) at that moment Josie could have relinquished to his words but instead she remained adamant.

    REFLECTION

Author Rosario Morales successfully manages to deliver a strong message of hope for women around the world through her use of plot, settings, point of view, style and dilemma. She instills a sense of strength in women who are experiencing domestic abuse but also in little girls like the twelve-year-old narrator that witnessed Josie as she stood up to her bully husband. Throughout history, women have been depicted as weak individuals, deprived of their rights and treated unfairly. That is why it is important that stories like The Day It Happened exist and continue to empower women who find themselves in any situation where their rights as human beings are violated. This story speaks truth and it illustrates that domestic abuse should not be tolerated in any way.

  • Christmas Book of Stories: A Sister’s Love

Christmas Book of Stories: A Sister’s Love

Happy Holidays valued readers! Indeed, it’s the most wonderful time of the year, it’s almost Christmas day! It’s the time of the year again where we treasure the moments of being together with our family and friends. The best present to have is to be with the most important people we cared so much and dearly love.  Today on the blog, one loving sister shared her story of love for her little brother. This story is inspired by true events happened during christmas season long time ago. First story in our Christmas book stories presents a sister’s love.

When is your most unforgettable Christmas?

Life always brings me memories either a good one or a bad one. I have experienced a lot of good things that stayed in my memories, but there’s one negative experience that I will never forget because when it happened, it left me a scar on my heart.  It was when something very unexpected happened to one of the members of my family. It affected me a lot because I just love and care for my whole family and if I can only know that a bad thing is going to happen I would rather go through that than any of them.

A few years ago before Christmas, one of my brothers got an accident when he was probably 5 years old. He fell in the chair and hit his head on a table. We were eating dinner in the afternoon, at that moment my mom and I suddenly screamed, I was sitting next to her when that happened, and I quickly got up. The next thing I saw was my brother’s face covered with blood. I got really scared I did not know what to do. Seeing my brother lying down on the floor like if he was dead was the worst experience in my life. My mom immediately got up and started to give aid to him. Then my mom told me to get some towel and used it to clean his face, but he couldn’t stop bleeding. My mom and I were the only ones at home that time and to make things worse the hospital was very far away from the village where we lived, two hours away to be exact. I felt like I got paralyzed and just started to cry for my brother. Then my mom told me to call my uncle George.  Uncle George was the only one who was kind enough to help and who lived close to our house. So I called and told him what happened to my brother and he did all what he could to get to us as soon as possible. My uncle was very helpful and told us to calm down and that he was going to take care of the situation and he drove us to the hospital.

On the way to the hospital my mom was holding my brother’s wound, hoping it would help stop the bleeding. It felt as if the road was endless because it took us forever to get to the hospital. It was getting late at night when we finally got there and my brother went to the emergency room. We had to wait in the waiting room until the doctor came to us to tell us that my brother was going to get a surgery. In that moment, I thought why him? he was just a kid; I would rather go through all that pain than him. A lot of thoughts came to my mind, I looked at my mom and the only thing I could see was the sadness in her face.

Hours and hours went by, that just made us feel desperate because we really wanted to know how the surgery went. It took the doctors 5 hours to complete the surgery. After that, the doctor came to us with the good news that my brother was going to be fine and that he would be recovering in a couple of days. All of us were so happy to hear that and two days later the doctor discharged him from the hospital.

Even though this memory is not a positive one, I see it as positive thing because it makes me appreciate life much more. This lesson that life gave me, taught me to never take life for granted. The feeling that we felt, that we almost lost him was the worst feeling that I ever felt in my life but the moment I saw him recover from this accident I felt like the most happiest person on earth because nothing else mattered to me than my brother’s health. Now I feel very blessed to see him grow healthy and happy but most importantly very thankful to God for giving him another opportunity to live and be with us now and let us share good moments and create good memories together. This has been the most unforgettable Christmas ever!

  • How Important It is To Have 8 Hours Good Night Sleep

How Important It is To Have 8 Hours Good Night Sleep

    8 Hours Good Night Sleep

It is a widely known fact that sleep is an important factor in the lives of people, just like eating healthy and exercising regularly. It comes with no surprise that every individual takes this seriously, considering that everyone starts a day with a certain goal in mind. This is a well followed advise that comes from doctors who recommend a total of eight hours of sleep because the fact is, eight hours of sleep indeed boost one’s productivity, improves one’s health and overall quality of life.

    Effects of Lack of Sleep

Every once in awhile, at nine o’clock in the morning a student walks in sluggishly in English class, room 121. Some struggle to enter the room as if  carrying a bag full of rocks and slamming their books on the table, others push open the door sipping coffee from a starbucks cup. People rather compromise sleep for countless of reasons such as procrastinating, leaving homework for the last minute before the day of school or getting off late from work, family responsibilities, etc. The point is, these circumstances can greatly interfere with productivity and can lead to severe consequences.

A person who does not get enough sleep the night before showing up to class will likely just doze off during an important lecture, or just have a hard time concentrating on taking notes during a film, looking tired and yawning a lot is definitely not a good impression. The lack of energy can lead a person to feel irritable, distracted and daydreaming which leads a person to find an escape that can make the class tolerable. One just does not have the willingness to do anything else, except think of that comfy bed waiting patiently at home.

The body feels tired for the rest of the day until 9 pm when again the mind snaps out of that shade for awhile and feels awake again but by then it is already late and the body is drained out of that energy fast because it is not well rested. Five hours of sleep or less is never enough for the body to recover from stressful busy days that is why people who do not get enough sleep always feel exhausted which leads to low performance on daily activities.

Benefits of Complete 8 Hours Sleep

There are so many great benefits of getting eight hours of sleep and one of those is the impact that it creates on one’s health. A good sleep the night before a presentation will act as a protective shield against pessimistic thoughts, or anything that might try to intrude the brain to trick it to act accordingly. This is why teachers recommend students to be well rested before a test because getting enough sleep can actually improve one’s memory.

Other great benefits of getting a good night sleep include, less likely to gain weight, rejuvenates, and decreases risk of heart disease and other dangerous illness. Breaking the routine of late night sleeping is something that one must do in order to get the most out of life because the lack of sleep might just be the one thing that could cut a good portion of someone’s life and longevity. Sleep gives the body the opportunity to reboot; the brain gets a chance to store every bit of information from the day before, and it also gives it a chance to catch up and freshen up for the next day. Shutting the eyes for at least 8 hours or so might just be the key to a much healthier body and mind.

    8 Hours Good Night Sleep

A good night sleep should definitely be endorsed. This is the one thing that almost everyone neglects and it is the one that matters the most because clearly a poor night’s rest leads to nothing good. We encounter numerous of obstacles in our daily lives and we wonder why it is so hard to find a solution. The mind gets blurry, the bones get heavy and it becomes hard to even take a step forward. All these things that can get in the way when trying to accomplish a goal. It is important to pause for a second, take a deep breath and get a good night sleep.

  • Inspiring Life Quotes from Mitch Albom’s 2018 Book: The Next Person You Meet in Heaven

Inspiring Life Quotes from Mitch Albom’s 2018 Book: The Next Person You Meet in Heaven

the next person you meet in heaven book cover

    Publisher’s Note:

In this enchanting sequel to the number one bestseller The Five People You Meet in Heaven, Mitch Albom tells the story of Eddie’s heavenly reunion with Annie—the little girl he saved on earth—in an unforgettable novel of how our lives and losses intersect.

On this new released book of Mitch Albom, I gathered some inspiring quotes that I hope will inspire you about life. I wrote my own reflection and opinion to each of these and I share my thoughts based on my own understanding and belief.

“No story sits by itself. Our lives connect like threads on a loom, interwoven in ways we never realize.”

I believe in the saying everything happens for a reason, people come in your life with a purpose and somehow our lives are connected to each other. Even though we all have our own stories here on Earth, at some point, we meet people in between and touched their lives we never thought we did. Like a thread woven in a fabric, we make real life stories together and be a part of each other’s lives.

“The tale of your life is written second by second, as shifting as the flip of a pencil to an eraser. There are so many times our lives are altered invisibly. The flip of a pencil, from written to erased.””

Making decisions is the most critical responsibility of being a human. We make our own tales depending on the decisions we make, whether it’d be good or bad, the result is the path we choose to take. It could lead you to success or regrets, rewards or loss, just like a pencil starting to draw the dream into reality or an eraser that would make that bright future disappear.

“ The disarming power of children: their need makes you forget your own.”

Motherhood is a journey where I begin to understand the value of being a woman. Words aren’t enough to describe the true joy and the unconditional love I have for my baby. I feel so grateful everyday that I was blessed to take care of a new life that came into this world out of love and from my own flesh and body. I love her more than I love myself, it’s the nature of being a parent. With the love I have for my baby, I provide everything she needed, her satisfaction is very important than anything else. I would say, being a parent is selfless, our children’s needs are the most priority that we tend to forget our own.

“First loves often remain in the heart, like plants that cannot grow in sunlight.”

Just exactly how the word describe itself, that was when you first experienced anything that makes your heart beats differently, something like a romantic feeling. The feeling usually stays even without you noticing, just like a seed that stays there planted within you.

“All children keep secrets. All parents do the same. We mold the version we want others to believe, boosting the disguise and tucking away the truth. It is how we can be loved by our closest family members and still, at times elude them.”

Who knew us better than ourselves, right? This particular quote made me asked myself why can’t we just be ourselves and be a living proof of truth? Why is it very natural for us to cover the flaws of our real identity in front of someone other than ourselves? Adulthood is more complicated than childhood therefore secrets are definitely harder to handle than keeping a child secret. Most often, whenever adults try to keep the secret as secret as possible, the cause will be a lie, one lie after another.  We try to be the other version of ourselves so others will believe and see us differently than who we truly are even though it already takes away our self truth.

“The wrongs we do open doors to do right.”

We learn from our mistakes and through falling, we learn how to stand and get back on our own feet again. Second chances are opportunity to not make the same mistakes again but to do all things right.

“Love comes when you least expect it. Love comes when you most need it. Love comes when you are ready to receive it or can no longer deny it. Love comes when it comes.”

Love comes in mysterious ways and I believe it’s also fate or destiny. Love is so magical and powerful. Although it comes in different ways, there’s one thing I am sure of, it is undeniably the most valuable thing that we all deserve, to love and to be loved.

“Loss is as old as life itself. But for all our evolution, we are yet to receive it.”

Life is fragile, life is uncertain. We were born and we live our years of existence but yet we shall return where we came from, from dust and soil. It is inevitable, we are human beings and our lives are not our own. As who and what we are, each of us has their end of time. We shall experience loss and suffer from sorrow and grief, it’s part of life and we are yet to receive it whether we like it or not.

“If you truly love someone, you’ll find a way back.”

True love is rare to find, no matter how hard it is, you’ll find a way to get to the person who you truly care for. True love can move mountains even to the most impossible ways just to be with that person who you want to be in your life.

“You lose something everyday you live , sometimes it’s as tiny as the breath you just expelled, sometimes it’s so big you think you won’t survive it.”

Little things are most often neglected and unnoticed just like how we exhale air everyday. It is indeed a fact that we lose something everyday, as simple and as practical of this example but real loss for me is grief and suffering. It is the hardest struggle you needed to get through in life, you move on or live with it.

the next person you meet in heaven
I am a big fan of Mitch Albom’s type of writing and I’m glad I have read again another sequel of one of his famous books. I always feel positive towards life after I read his stories about heaven, it inspires me to be good and be a kind soul to every living here on Earth and make my life more meaningful by touching  the lives of others. I hope I have provided you a little bit of inspiration and if you do have your own thoughts about each of the quotes I listed here, please feel free to comment and let me know your opinions.

Fall 2018, October- pumpkin patch time! First pumpkin patch was a success! Mia was in the perfect mood to play in the hay and touched the pumpkins. This year, we visited Larry’s Produce in Fairfield, California to take Mia in her first ever pumpkin patch. We went in the opening hour of the farm, at 9 in the morning. It was a perfect day, the sun was up but the heat was just fine, the surrounding felt cool and what we were most grateful for was that there was no crowd, the place was perfect for Mia’s pumpkin patch photoshoot.

Larry’s Produce has variety of pumpkins, different kinds in different sizes, small to the biggest! Also they have wide selection of fruits and vegetables in the cheapest price, even cheaper when you harvest direct from the farm. When we arrived in the place, we were welcomed by a giant chicken display surrounded by numerous pumpkins. Mia looked so amazed by the gigantic chicken, her eyes widened as she stared long in  it. The pumpkins were in big containers and long carts but the biggest ones were scattered in the ground and on top of tractors or pile of hays. Mia enjoyed sitting in the ground, she played with the hay and hit the pumpkins as hard as she could. We had a great time taking her photos with the pumpkins!

Mia also had lots of fun playing in the corn kernel shed area and riding a kid’s tractor near the pyramid of hay. After we’re done with Mia’s photoshoot, we didn’t miss the chance to get a family photo! Indeed another milestone had been greatly achieved!

How about you, where did you celebrate pumpkin patch this year?

  • Indoor Plants That Are Easy To Grow

Indoor Plants That Are Easy To Grow

    indoor plants

When I decide that I needed some green plants in my house my first option was to buy some artificial ones. I had not been good with plants in the past. I had tried gardening and I had killed all my plants or I ended up handing over the lives of those plants to my mom (who loves gardening) and she tried to revive them. It was pretty clear that I wasn’t at all good at planting or anything that had to do with that matter. I was terrible at going outside in the morning and water them or I’d just forget about them. That is why I thought artificial ones would do the job inside, I mean, you buy them, place them where you want them to be and you’re set! So I ended up buying a few of those fake ones and for a while I was content with the way they had transformed the rooms of my house. They looked ok for the most part. But still, I wasn’t totally convinced.

One day a friend of mine gave me a baby of her spider plant. At first, I was dubious that I would keep that plant alive, but she assured me that those kind of house plants are so easy to take care of. I loved the way hers looked in very well decorated pots and she had three of them on her window sill, all which had little babies dangling on the side. They were gorgeous, but I doubt I would ever get mine to look that nice. I took the chance, I placed the baby plant in a glass of water in my kitchen counter top  next to the sink. Those green leaves with stripes of white in the center of each leave looked so nice in my kitchen. One of my problem with plants is that I am not patient, and I believe that is one of the factors that I disregarded them because most of the time you have to buy them when they are small, and it takes forever for them to grow to a desired size. I would look at my baby spider plant every day hoping to see a root sprout out in the water. I wanted it to sprout a bunch of roots in a day! that’s how impatient I was.

After a few days I gave in and decided to just let it be, I decided to be happy to just have the leaves look as nice as the first day I got the plant. I learned to enjoy it just the way it was with or without roots because honestly the plant made my kitchen look good. For a whole week every day it looked the same, until finally after what seemed like forever at the bottom of the small plant a root appeared. I felt hopeful and proud that I had not given up on it. I learned to be patient and as though the little plant had taken that as a cue many more roots appeared, soon I found myself buying a nice pot for it. Spider plants are just wonderful indoor plants that are easy to grow.

    spider plant

Here are a few other plants that I find easy to grow

    Aloe Vera

    aloe vera

I love my aloe Vera plant, I recently got it and it is thriving. It has some long healthy leaves that shoot from the sides. Also, it makes me happy to see new leaves appear from the center. It makes me feel like I am doing something right even though it barely requires any effort to take care of. I have cut a few of the leaves already to use it for burns and rushes and so far it has done a fantastic job healing my wounds. I couldn’t be any happier with this plant.

    Peace lily

    peace lily

I have this one in my dinning room placed on a corner where it gets just enough light. I got this peace lily because it is considered as one of the beginner plants. It has dark green leaves and white flowers. Some new leaves are uncurling from the bottom part of the plant along with a lot of new little flowers. I feel like this plant and I still have to get to know each other a little bit but we’re getting there. The older leaves have brown tips so I am trying to figure out what I’m doing wrong. I am going to stay resilient, this plant is worth the effort.

    Pothos

    pothos

Every plant lover has one of this plant. Every time I went plant shopping I couldn’t get my eye off of it. The reason I didn’t get it right away is because they were always in hanging plastic pots and as for now I am not ready to make holes in the ceiling. So I kind of just saw them as hanging plants instead of the kind that you can just put in a pot and place it on a side table. It might sound a little ridiculous that I waited until they were available in the regular plastic pots but that’s what I did. This plant did not disappoint me, it looks stunning in its blue pot and I can’t wait for its stems to appear and start trailing.

    Succulentssucculent

These guys are awesome, ever since I discovered them I have been obsessed. I have been asking people for cuttings or leaves, and I have been propagating them. I only bought one to start with, which got a little out of control because I placed it in a low light place. The stems elongated leaving big gaps between the leaves which lead to me taking the plant apart. I had to strip all the leaves off the stem and then cut the small rosettes of the tip and planted them in a different pot. Currently, I am propagating the leaves and a few already have little plants.  Propagation takes long, it literally took a month or so for some roots to appear. I am enjoying learning more and more about succulents

Needless to say, my house is full of plants at the moment. I am loving the process of taking care of my plants. Not only are they making the inside of my house look beautiful but some of these plants are air purifiers, so they are pretty good for the health. These plants add beauty, color and provide a very relaxing environment. I am learning about my plants every day. I think I am doing a good job so far because I haven’t killed any and I don’t plan to.

  • Reasons Why I Love My Dog

Reasons Why I Love My Dog

What a great dog he turned out. My baby boy is a year old now and I don’t have enough words to express how happy he has made me and my family. He is a big dog, he weighs a good 102 lbs but he is gentle. I have gotten used to being around Rio, I have learned so much from him this past year. There are so many reasons why I love my dog, things that I would never give up for anything in the world. I would go on and on writing about the reasons why I love Rio  but I’ll just list a few that stand out he most for me.

    He greets me every morning.

The moment I open the door of my room my furry friend is there circling around me with his tail wiggling from side to side. he sits and I bend down to pet him and tell him good morning. Before I can do anything else to start my day, I clean Rio’s food and water bowl and give him his food and water afterwards. Already he has given me a good start to my day and I wouldn’t want it any other way.

Knowing when I’m about to go out.

He knows when I’m about to go out when he sees me grab my bag and my keys and waits beside me to take him with me. Depending on the day, there are times when I can’t take him with me, regardless he makes an attempt to convince me to take him along. He begs me with those adorable eyes, sniffs on his leash which is usually hanging on the hook behind the door. I pet him and tell him that I can’t take him with me and assure him that as soon as I get back I’ll take him out. He understands, he moves away from the door to sit down and watch me as I leave. As I get inside my car I look back to the window to see him standing there as to say “see you soon, I’ll be here waiting for you”. This never fails to make me happy.

He loves to play soccer, he makes such a great goalkeeper.

My little Brother Brad is a soccer fan, he plays with his soccer ball on the backyard all the time. One of the reasons we got Rio was because Brad convinced mom and dad that he needed a pet that he could play with. Rio definitely did not disappoint him, almost every day I see the two of them playing on the green grass on the backyard. Rio stands waiting at the goal stand as Brad prepares to shoot, both are panting and when Brad calculates where the ball might get in; he kicks and Rio immediately dashes towards the ball to prevent Brad from scoring, Rio grabs the ball between his teeth as Brad falls on the grass with his hands over his head in dismay. They continue paying until both are tired. I love watching them play, it is such a warm feeling to know that Brad has found a true friend for so many years to come.

Looking at passing cars or people walking on the sidewalk out the window.

One of the things that Rio does is lean on the back of the couch to look at passing cars on the street. Every once in a while he wiggles his tail when someone with a dog walks by stopping only until they disappear behind the bushes. He even greets the mail man when he slips the mail in the mailbox. He watches him intently as he makes his way to the house next door. I believe this is what Rios does all the time when he is left alone for a few hours in the house. He know how to entertain himself while he waits for a car to pull over the driveway.

He lets me know when he is hungry by rubbing his paw on his food container.

Before I get close to the food container Rio is already there sitting next to it. He rubs the lid with his paws a few times telling me that it is time to eat. I proceed to open the lid and pour two cups of his food in the bowl, Rio just watches, waiting for me to finish and once I am done he looks at me asking me if it is OK for him to start eating to which I reply “go ahead boy”. He jumps up and starts eating.

    Playing hide and seek.

I throw one of his toys outside and he goes to fetch it by the time he comes back I am already gone, hiding somewhere inside the house. Once he reaches the front door he leaves his toy on the ground and goes looking for me. Sometimes I hide behind the door, under a desk or next to the couch. At first it took him a while to find me but he has gotten so much better. Once he finds me, he wiggles his tail in excitement and goes back to his toy waiting for me to throw it on the backyard again.

He likes to sleep with a pillow under his head.

Ever since Rio arrived to live with us he has always slept with a pillow under his head. When he sleeps on the couch he makes himself comfortable and places his head on the arm of the couch. Rarely I will see him sleeping without a pillow but that is when he is laying on the carpet when it is hot for him to sleep on his bed or the couch. I just think that is so cute, he truly brings a smile on my face when I see him sleeping like a little baby even though he is a big dog.

Rio lets me know someone is at the door when I’m somewhere in my room.

One of the benefits of having a dog is that they let you know when someone is about to knock on your front door. Sometimes I am sitting on the couch when Rio suddenly jumps up and walks to the window. I can tell from him when it is someone that I know or if it is a stranger. If it is an acquaintance he will incessantly wiggle his tail and his pointy ears pull back, he goes to the door to meet that person. If it is a stranger, he will bark, he will still want to go to the door and see who it is but he doesn’t stop barking. When it comes to a stranger his goal of course is to warn me, my best friend lets me know to be careful and stands next to me as I open the door. Sometimes it’s just the pizza guy or the UPS guy wanting me to sing a paper for him before he delivers a package, Rio calmly looks and relaxes. He is just a perfect dog, that will be there for me no matter what.

    He makes me happy!

Oh what can I say, Rio is the perfect definition of happiness. One year has gone by very fast and I don’t know why it took me so long to finally make the decision to have a dog. I don’t know why I even doubt it, I’m just so happy to have Rio in my life.

The History of a great man

    My Father

    A Humbled Man

He was a child of a poor couple living in a barrio, a small village far in the mountains of Romblon. He was a brother, later on got married to be a husband of a humbled woman and eventually became a Father. He gave his family a best father can give; a life full of love, hope, happiness and anything life could offer. He built his family a home not in elegance but in simplicity and contentment. As a father, he worked with all his might in all the ways he tried, to earn money and gave his family all the support he could. He had struggles and difficulties facing all the challenges in life but he became courageous to overcome them as he stood firm with his whole faith against each of these burdens, he became the strength of the home he built.

For his family, he became a man he never thought he could be. He became their hero, a hero who they looked up to for being so strong yet very humbled despite all the struggles and difficulties that life had given him. He never lost his faith, he never stopped moving his feet forward, he never gave up when he was already suffering. As a human being he sometimes felt weak but his bravery to protect his family against pitfalls of life was undeniably astounding. Though his life had been tough, he stayed well-founded and motivated to lift himself up whenever he felt frail. A man who had given his whole life working hard just to provide a better life for his family became a real father, a loving husband, a generous brother and a very caring son.

“Be on your guard; stand firm in faith; be courageous; be strong1 Corinthians 16:3

    Papa and Children

    A Real Father

Unlike any fathers who worked in companies and offices with stable income to feed their family, he was different. He was not born with a golden spoon but he tried to gain education by himself, he worked and went to school at the same time. Due to their economic situation and life’s circumstances, he didn’t finish studying and never got any degree in college that would help him qualify for a stable job. At first, he had no money but he was very passionate on working, on learning, and discovering everything on his own. Financial scarcity was real during these early times but with his eagerness to work made him be a jack-of-all-trades man which helped him bring money home, he tried everything he could possibly done with his skills and that made him a good responsible provider for his wife and children.

Being a father of 3; two sons and a daughter. Being a father was a tough and very good challenge in life for him. He taught them proper manners, right disciplines and good guidance, he gave them freedom to seek the goodness of life on their own. Even though he had guided them well, there were situations that required him to be on his strongest state of being a father for the sake of love and comfort of his children. When one of his child lost his path, he was hurt and saddened but he didn’t despise him nor tolerate him of his wrongdoings, he had hope for his son to be better again and so together they struggled and succeeded. From his own words “If I turned my back on my children, what kind of a father I am. If I lose hope on my own son, who will be patient and willing to guide and be there for him?”. He was tough but at the same time he was kind and forgiving.

“Discipline your son while there is hope, And do not desire his death” Proverbs 19:18

For his kids he was more than a father, especially for his only daughter who spent most of her younger years with him until she became a woman, he was her first best friend and the first man she loved with all her heart. He was her living protector and knight against harm and danger, he was her safe comfort when she felt scared, he was her great listener when she needed someone to talk to, he was her travel buddy wherever she felt like going to an adventure and more importantly he was her inspiration of life. She had gained all her values from him, had grown into a well mannered woman, and had built her strong faith because of him and his disciplines. He had shown her how to value life and how essential it is to appreciate everything about life. He was not a perfect man but in her eyes, he was the perfect man and that made her dream of her own prince in the exact character image of him. She had witnessed him gain success with his patience, bravery and courage in life and that is what made her admire him the most.

She knows she loved him so much but her father’s love for her was far more than she could ever give back. He loved his children unconditionally more and beyond the love that his children gave him.

    Mama and Papa

    A Loving Husband

Marriage life has lots of ups and downs but their own journey as a couple was an inspiring tale. As a husband he was always there for his wife from all life’s hardships and adversities. He stood as her man in all life’s uncertainty and stayed loyal and worthy of her love. They lived and worked together for decades of years but his love for her was as fresh as the first time they committed themselves to be one in marriage.

He was not the man a woman might be dreaming of, good-looking, wealthy, and appealing but for a woman who became his wife, he was humble, gentle, loyal, compassionate, generous, hard-working and a selfless man. From the hearts and thoughts of his children, he was a loving husband to their mother.

His thoughts would always include his wife, how she is and what would she thinks. He would care with all her thoughts and feelings toward a decision to make or to a certain situation especially when it’s concerning their family. He was considerate with all her decisions and respects her in every way, as his wife and as the mother of his children. He never fail to appreciate his wife’s love, he kissed and hugged her every time he got a chance. When she felt sad and moody, he would dance crazily in front of her just to make her smile and laugh.

He made sure to show his wife that he valued and appreciated everything that she was doing for him and for their children.

“Husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.” Ephesians 5:28

    A Generous Brother

He was not wealthy but his generosity to offer his help and share whatever he has cannot be denied by many. He helped a lot of people in his own simple way from his needy workers and friends to his family members, brother, sister and relatives. He shared the small amount of money that he had just to help with the needs of one. He also shared work with them to help them earn money and that way feed their families. He was generous enough to share his knowledge and ideas to someone who was willing to learn and work with him so that they could earn money together.

He always had his big heart open to his brother and sister whenever they needed his help, either with money or moral needs. Even though he could not offer a full financial support to them, he tried to give as much as he could, on top of that he was a good listener and adviser whenever they needed to share their life issues with him.

Better the little that the righteous have than the wealth of many wicked; for the power of the wicked will be broken, but the LORD upholds the righteous.” Psalm 37:16-17

     Papa and his parents

    A Caring Son

He was not young, he himself was an aging parent but he was also a child and a son of a 90 years old couple. Even if he had aged as old as he was and despite of being busy with life, he cared so much for his parents all his life. He managed to visit them everyday after work even to his most tiring day. Like a small kid, he shared his stories with them and laugh together with his jokes. He frequently had special time with them by gathering the rest of his family to eat together and talk about life. This was his way of showing his parents his love and nowadays they still appreciate him of what he did for them and that always brings back memories which makes them miss him so much.

“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.”  Exodus 20:12

The special man that I am talking about was my beloved father. I have described him as best as I could but words will never be enough to express how much I admired him. I cannot be more proud and  grateful of him than I am now. I thank God for blessing me to have him as my father. I know that my life will never be the same without him but as we all know life just goes on whether we like it or not. But one thing I’m sure about is that no matter what my dad will always be in my heart and that he is now my angel in heaven, I know that he is still watching over me, my mama and my brothers, praying closer to God for our safety and guidance in the journey of life.

    First Time Job Hunter

    Working_Minimum_Wage_Job

I was about 18 years old when I seriously considered getting a job, I was about to graduate from high school and by then all I was thinking about was ways to help my dad with the money. My teachers of course had told me to go straight to college unless I wanted to end up flipping burger patties my whole life but I didn’t’ heed their advice. I would have continued school had I had it sorted out, had I known what I wanted to do then. I decided I would take a year off to figure things out, get a job, try something new while bringing some money home.

For a very long time I have wondered what it would be like to get a proper job, how it would be like to help my family and feel useful for once in my life. That was all that was in my head, I had convinced myself that by getting a job I would be treated with respect and it would make me more mature and maybe through the course of time I would learn what I truly wanted to do with my life. So with that in mind I started the job hunt. I decided that I would apply to some retail stores, fast food restaurants or wherever an inexperienced teenager would be hired. I mostly applied online thinking it would be easier and because that made the whole process less daunting. I tried to go inside some stores and ask if there was any opening available, I even rehearsed what I would say. During those unsuccessful tries I realized that I was shy and I was so certain that that was the least quality that an employer wanted to see in a candidate. Especially in retail stores where all you have to do is socialize, you have to persuade people into buying a product. After a month as I was beginning to lose hope I received a call from a McDonald’s manager asking me if I could stop by for an interview on the afternoon.

Surprisingly, I got hired right on the spot. I didn’t know then that that was the first of three interviews that I would have for the next 4 years in which all I got hired. All three jobs where different from worst to better, each taught me something but none of them I felt comfortable working in and I realized that I couldn’t quit job after another because that would lead me to nowhere.Mcdonalds_JobJob #1

I didn’t know what this job was going to lead to. At the time I thought it was a good start, it was by all means a job that didn’t require any experience. How bad could it be right? I never expected to end up working in the kitchen, I was completely unaware of how ruthless some people could be to a person who’s never had a job before. They made themselves feel superior just because they had spent half of their lives working in there. I guess they had forgotten that it was part of their job to train others too and not be mean to them. I don’t know if working at the front counter would have been any better than the kitchen but I kept insisting the manager to let me try it. In the end I worked three years in the kitchen, making burgers and cleaning. I abhorred the idea of being there, working relentlessly, coming home every day tired and not feeling like doing anything else. One night as I was working one out of three day  graveyard shifts I did every week I wondered deeply if it was all worth it. All the scars on my arms from the hot oil, the excruciating 15 minutes that I had to endure in the freezer filling up my cart with frozen food just to have it ready for the morning shift. I had done what I could here and it wasn’t working. I did what any sensible person would have done in my situation. I quit.

    7_Eleven_JobJob #2

I guess I had  taken this journey to find myself, to feel worth it. It is good, advisable even, to tell someone to go out there, try something new until you are reconnected with what you really want to do with your life. I gave another job a go. I had gotten so used to keeping myself busy that I felt weird staying at home. I applied at 7-Eleven, a day later I was called for an interview. I have to say that working here felt like opening my eyes for the first time in so long. I learned to use a cash register, I learned to interact with people and most of all my shyness was slowly ebbing away. I found it comfortable and fun working with my coworkers. This job was stressful on days when I had to work 8 hours shifts by myself and I was always scared that someone would come in the store and rob me and it was quite disappointing that they wouldn’t even give lunch breaks, not even 10 or 15 minute breaks. On days when I was scheduled to work with one person, especially if it was with the people that I had a blast working with the stressful days seemed bearable. The day I left that job, my coworkers organized a surprise party for me, that’s how nice they were. They told me that they appreciated my hard work and my commitment to the job. I wanted to prove my strength this time, I didn’t want to feel chained to this job and having the decision to quit this job whenever I felt ready was another way for me to take control. Control to guide my life to where it’s supposed to go. I knew my coworkers understood this and they supported me all the way. Payless_Shoe_Job Job #3

There I was at the entrance of another store ready to start a new day at my new job. Payless seemed very convenient for a part-time job. I had made a conscious decision to find a job that would leave time for school. Out of the three Payless was the least stressful job that I had. I didn’t even know such thing existed, I was told to run the cash register, clean and fix shoes. I had to learn to use the stick that is used to bring shoes down from the stack above the shelve. Balancing it with just one hand was a pain in the neck, having a bunch of boxes hurling on my head was pretty embarrassing and genuinely annoying. My coworkers were friendly, they always had my back whenever I needed them and most of them were working part time for the same reason as me. I got a 30 minutes lunch break and two ten minutes break. There were always two people working every shift which I was grateful for because like any other store there were a lot of shoplifters. Coming home from work everyday and still have the energy to concentrate on school felt really great. But one morning as I was driving up the parking lot there was a “Store Closing” sign plastered on the big windows of the store. I did not see that coming, I had heard rumors about Payless filing for bankruptcy but I thought that they were just that, rumors. It was disappointing, I had planned to stay there for a little bit longer until I finished with school. Things happen, this was bound to end like this and for once I was OK with how events turned out.

School is my main priority now. Yet again, it is another adventure worth living and recalling. I have learned so much working for the past four years. It feels good to have finally gotten to this point in my life. There are still challenges and I still struggle to find my place in this world but I take every experience at heart for that is what this life is all about.

My name is Lizett and that is my story. Feel free to comment below and you are welcome to share your experience with me. Thanks for reading and God bless you on whatever your journey may be.
