Mia’s Little Feet Adventures: Sawyer’s Camp Trail

How about a getaway after Thanksgiving? Yes! that was another adventure of our baby, Mia’s little feet second outdoor adventure!

After the joy of thanksgiving at home, our family planned to go somewhere to spend a good time together outdoors. We wanted to enjoy the season outside and we wanted our baby to visit some place where she could feel the breeze of the nature in her skin. So we decided to go to a Camp Trail in San Mateo and then to a beach in Santa Cruz. Early in the morning after the joyful night of thanksgiving celebration, we got up and made ourselves ready. I packed all Mia’s needs including anything else she may needed and my loving husband’s job was to secured Mia’s carrier and stroller in the van while the rest of the family were in charge of the food. Before we left I had to feed baby and changed her diaper before we put her in her carrier and in the car seat. After all our valuables were prepared we put everything in the van then off we go!

    SAWYER CAMP TRAIL

Mia was sleeping so soundly in her car seat that she didn’t even bother the noise we made when we were sharing laughter and jokes while traveling. It took us an hour and a half to reached the camp.

Sawyer Camp is a part of Crystal Springs Regional Trail in the south of San Mateo County. It is best known for its lengthy trail which  bikers/cyclist, hikers, joggers and horseback riders love the most. It is a very popular recreation for families because there you can spend time exercising together while enjoying the serenity of the water reservoir and the shades of trees around the area.

When we arrived, we found numerous cars parked on the side of the road and that made it very difficult for us to find parking especially for the size of the van that we had, we needed big parking space to fit in. We needed to go back and forth to find the right spot and fortunately after 15 minutes or so we finally found a good space to park, it was not close to the camp entrance way but we didn’t have a choice.

Everybody got off the van while Mia tried to open her eyes and fully stretched her arms as she wondered where she was. We took her in her stroller and walked with everyone a few miles away towards the camp’s entrance. Restrooms were near the entrance gate, we took advantage of that and pee before walking on the trail. Once we started walking we saw a lot of people walking, jogging and biking, some were coming towards us and others were heading same direction as ours. It was a cool sunny day with lot of winds. We were glad that we were wearing our jackets and that we wrapped our baby well with blankets. While walking we got to see beautiful view of the water reservoir. The tranquility and the great landscape were breathtaking, it was such a very picturesque view. We saw benches along the side of the trail in several different spots to allow people to rest and hydrate. The trail was very long and we had to stop to rest and sat on one and feed Mia with bottle of milk. Nothing else was more special than to see our baby smirked as sunshine and cool wind kissed her face.We continued walking until we got tired and decided not to go further more. The trail seem to not have an end but the time we spent to walk was way worth it because it gave us a good time to talk and joke. Even though we did not get to the end of that trail we still had to praise ourselves because we made it long where we where that even felt like it was 3 miles and that for us was very long since we rarely do long walks. This was definitely a nice experience to unwind such lovely place and I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves to have outdoor adventures.THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE TRAVELING TO THIS PLACE:

    1. Expect to walk some distance away from the entrance of the camp because there are a lot of people visiting the place and parking is a bit difficult to find.

    2. Sawyer Camp Trail does NOT allow dogs to enter. Not a dog- friendly area.

  • Lake Temescal, Oakland CA: Baby Mia’s 1st Outdoor Adventure

Lake Temescal, Oakland CA: Baby Mia’s 1st Outdoor Adventure

CATCHING TWO BIRDS IN ONE STONE

Mia was about a month old and some days when we took her to an outdoor adventure in a lake in Oakland. As a new mommy I kinda was worried about taking her out of the house because the outside world was all new to her and her skin was so delicate that it’ll be hard for her to combat the type of weather outside. But then I realized that we already had been inside the house for a month and she looked healthy and maybe it was time for the both of us to get some fresh air outside so that we could expose Mia to the natural light and have her experience a different pace too. To make that happen all I needed to do was to get everything ready and be mindful of necessary precautions so that baby would not get sick.

The following questions that I had in mind before leaving home with baby:

    1. What are the MUST HAVE’S that baby needs when she’s on an outside adventure?

Of course her formula milk, bottles, thermo container for her hot water, diapers, wipes, blankets, bibs, extra clothes, hat, mittens and the most important thing; the carrier and the stroller.

    2. How should I properly dress her?

I told myself that it depends on the weather outside and the time we needed to go to the Lake it would be early in the morning and it was obviously cold so I dressed her appropriately by making her wear a pinky hoodie. I did not want to overdress or under-dress her but just fine that she would not feel cold at all. I made sure to dress her in layers and covered her head, hands and feet. After I prepared all her things and everyone in the family packed everything from our food to the other necessary things we needed, we headed our way to Lake Temescal: Temescal Regional Recreational Area in Oakland California. It is located next to the junction highways 24 & 13 in Oakland. It is an urban oasis where big trees and the panoramic view of Lake Temescal can be found. It is a very convenient place for family picnics and other recreational activities such as fishing, biking and hiking.

HOW FAR IS IT FROM HOME?

It took us an hour drive from where we live (Vallejo, CA) to get to Lake Temescal. We arrived in the place early in the morning around 9 a.m and we parked the car for free (there’s a mini wood tent with a poster about details of parking fee but nobody was there). There were already numerous cars parked and we saw some families like us have their own baby too with them in strollers. There was a cold breeze of wind coming from the trees and leaves were falling on the ground while kids started to run back and forth playing and parents were busy  pulling out their things from their cars.

WHAT ARE THE FEATURES OF LAKE TEMESCAL?

Our baby Mia was always asleep after a car ride as expected, when we arrived she was still asleep when No, my husband took her carrier from the car seat. We headed to the lake and we passed through a lot of picnic tables and some of them were already occupied by families or group of students gathered together to eat. There was a big kids playground and available restrooms were next to it. As we walked through the pathway we saw big trees along the sidewalk. We started to look for space with a picnic table but for our surprise some of them were already marked as reserved and there was one that was reserved for a wedding celebration which had a lot of chairs and balloons lined up with the flowers. We did some walking until we found an available space for us. We really liked the one we found because the lake was just foots away. It was a spacious picnic table under a tree with a grill on the side and its near to a fishing dock. We had our food grilled for our lunch while having very happy moments of laughter and talks. Under the tree where we sat, I held Mia in  my arms and gave her milk. Her eyes winked when the tree leaves moved and swayed because of the wind.

After our lunch, we went to see the fishing dock and there were men with their fishing poles patiently waiting for a catch. We saw that they have their nets too and they have already caught some fish. We didn’t have our fishing poles so we just watched and those men were friendly enough to talked to us about how they fish. We took baby Mia with us and she loved the cool wind blowing from the lake and her eyes wondered when she saw the fish in the net. But when we went back to our table she had fallen back to sleep in the shoulders of her Grandpa. Lake Temescal is a dog friendly park too. We saw a lot of people walking with their dogs and some stopped in front of us to introduce them to us. We loved dogs and we enjoyed talking with strangers, those dog owners who passed through us and let us play with their lovely pet for some time.  There was also this student who had his drone and so friendly that he happily talked to us about how it works.

    OVERALL EXPERIENCE

It was indeed a fun day for all of us even to our little Mia. She had her first outdoor adventure, different environment, got some fresh air and enjoyed the natural light of the day. This lovely place will always be a part of her sweet memories as others would say “First times are always unforgettable”.

  • How It All Happened: The New Beginning

How It All Happened: The New Beginning

    A Milestone of New Beginning

Marriage is the base ground or the strong foundation of our commitment to the love that would last a lifetime even in the most challenging times of life.  We are now moving ahead with our lives as one body and soul in the journey to forever.

I am an Asian and my husband is a Latino, 2 different people of different race, different culture, different principles and beliefs and a total different well being. We have met as strangers in a social network back in 2009, built a constant communication from 2015 and through this we have known each other well. We offered each other friendship but the continuous  talks and sharing of everything became a special connection between me and him that eventually resulted to that special feeling of love that we never really expected. Even us didn’t believe with this kind of relationship before but as it happened to us, I could say now that it’s true. Love has no boundaries, its a magical thing that can happen even to the most unexpected way, it was real and it did really happen as the reality of the beginning of our love story. From then we made sure to introduce each other to our families even only through tools or by  technological means of communication. Despite the doubts and questions that they have, we were blessed to have their happiness for both of us and their approval to our relationship.

As we knew the sea of life has lots of waves, the challenges and trials are inevitable and through this we tests ourselves how strong we are as a human being. We, at the same time realized how strong is our relationship to the people who truly love and care about us. This is how we build the foundation of our relationship to each of our loved ones especially to our partners in life.

We were in the delight of love when life strikes its strongest storm to one of us. My father got a motorcycle accident and after a day he passed away, it was the hardest struggle I’ve been through and with the pain and grief, sorrow had drowned me. At first I thought I would reach my weakest point but I stood firm because of the unconditional support and love of my partner/boyfriend. He slowly lifted my spirit from sorrow and despair of loss, he had offered me the unconditional support I really needed in those darkest times of my life. Love has been so powerful that even though he was in the farthest place away from me and with the difference of time, it never became a hindrance to communicate and be with each other in those times of suffering and hardship. As I try to accept the process of healing, he became one of my inspiration and motivation to move ahead with life and see another light of new beginning. He had came to visit me in my country, had talked to my entire clan of family and brought me to some places I could unwind to freed myself from all the thoughts of the painful past I’ve been through.

From our trips, we have shared our own special moments together in which we have known each other’s character and stories of identity. Our love for each other had developed into maturity and more serious state until finally we have decided to settle down into a decision of getting married. By that time my fiance had to go back to his country to let his family know and I’ve done the same, I have talked to my mom and brothers about it as well. As normal reactions of concerned parents, the acceptance was not easy. Due to the fact that we just met on the web and we came from a total different race and culture, doubts and hesitations from our families cannot be denied.

The decision of getting married means the acceptance of the whole family from our both sides, despite all the risks and in whatever situation of life we are in. It was a tough decision to make considering that those risks might result to a total success or total failure. Concerns about the possibilities of “what if’s” and “if only” were a risky truth to take and a courageous matter to be conquered. Doubts and hesitations from our families have been addressed well and known to us for the assurance of understanding all the consequences of our decision and the risk we would want to take. But our love had overruled everything, it was brave, courageous and strong, it had been our assurance against the uncertainties, our only reason to believe to the success of our relationship. 23rd of March 2017- Wedding day. Simple but very joyous day to celebrate when our relationship was finally in the legality of lifetime commitment. Being young and married is quite a blessing and a blissful start for both of us. As a couple who started from a very distant commitment, it was a true joy to be in each other’s arms after the sacrifice of being apart for a year. Having been in a long distance relationship is quite a long journey of communication, the only way to build the force of our relationship into reality and to see the truth behind the distance that sets us apart. When I say communication, it was not just through words but the feeling of being fully related with your special someone. As if he was always present beside you consciously listening with his whole being, all his concerns and care. Individually, we have our own separate stories of storms in life but through the power of connection that we have created in our commitment, each of us became the strength of each other.19th of September 2017– We are now happily married and with the love and grace of God, we are blessed to have our most precious little girl. Stepping up to the milestone of family life, a new beginning with full of hopes and prayers to a love that would last a lifetime.

  • Thanksgiving Full of Love and A Joyous Holidays

Thanksgiving Full of Love and A Joyous Holidays

    September 19th, 2017,

“Here at the hospital with mom waiting for my daughter to be born.

My wife is suppose to be due on September 29th but it looks like our baby wants to come out of her mother’s tummy soon. My wife woke up around 5 and started to feel false or initial contractions whatever they call them. Then an hour passed and she had to get up and see if the pain could lessen or go away. The whole family was already up getting ready to go to work and for school. We told them the news that the baby is giving signs to come soon. We had to change our plans and I had to stay home and be there in case the contractions get worse. Another 2 hours passed by and the contractions just got worse and that was simply because the time of labor was approaching and I had to call mom to come back home from work so that she could be with us. She came back and ask about the symptoms and from her experience she was able to tell that it was time to go to the hospital.

So we headed to the hospital and since it was during day time we had to go straight to the lobby and check in instead of just going to the emergency room. There was a guard right in front of the entrance checking who goes in and out and when we told her that she was about to give birth the guard immediately told us to come upstairs and that is exactly what we did and they started to check her and run some test about the contractions and from their understanding the baby wasn’t far. Her cervix was already opened enough for them to tell that the baby might come soon. My wife was then admitted immediately and we were transferred to another room while all the nurses prepared all the medical supplies for baby’s delivery.

I saw my wife with lots of pain with the contractions getting stronger and stronger every single time but we were very thankful that with the Epidural that they have done for her (spinal tap) the pain was gone. As I asked her how she felt after the shot she just smiled and said that she can only feel the pressure now and with that I felt relieved of worrying.

We thought baby will come out soon after the epidural but its been almost 8 hours since we got here in the hospital and baby is not coming out yet. My wife was asleep for now as preparation for the pushing later. According to the nurse the epidural delays labor longer so probably we have to wait few more hours until baby is ready to come out.

I am very excited and I can’t wait to see her soon!”

This is a draft made by my husband the day I’m about to deliver our very first baby. He was my strength against pain of labor and he was my all time support after delivery too (blessed wife me lol). When we finally see baby, the tears of joy just flowed in our eyes. The realization how blessed we are to be a new parent for such a wonderful blessing was instant and undeniable. Words couldn’t describe well the feeling we have experienced that very first second we saw our baby. She just made us a family with me as Mommy and with Daddy. She was our biggest gift this year, our greatest blessing to be thankful for this thanksgiving and our bunch of joy this coming Christmas.

How about you what’s your greatest blessing this year? Have you ever wonder how blessed you are with the things you have right now?

For sure, there’s always a reason to celebrate and to be thankful for each year! A Happy Thanksgiving and a Happy Holidays in Advance!

Head to the Top: The Sutro Tower & Twin Peaks of San Francisco,CA

Who would say no to an adventure of exploring new places which were just few miles away from where you at?

After a business appointment in one of the places in San Francisco we drove up ourselves to visit some of the closest attractive spots that we saw on our way. From a further view, we saw a tower prominently standing on the hills of the city, The Sutro Tower featured itself in the foggy skyline, it’s one of the city’s landmark.

We have seen this view in some famous movies and that is what made us eager to take a closer look and see it in reality. We had to park on the last street where the last home is and walked up hoping to get some beautiful views and that made us have a good walking adventure. It was a perfect cool sunny day near noon time when we reached the tower, the cold breeze blew constantly from the tall trees and wild flowers bloomed silently in the corner of tall grasses.

The sky started to clear as the day progressed and it made us saw the tower standing in the clear sky in stripes of red color and white. The surroundings of the tower was clean, peaceful, quiet and a pet friendly environment. There were big logs on the side-walks which I suppose were benches to rest upon.We walked around the place to explore some interesting things this place offered and as we walked a bit further we have discovered a view of a small water reservoir lying in few meters away down the lower hill. The water showed the reflection of the clear sky and sparkled with the sun’s heat, it was indeed very refreshing view. During our walk we saw beautiful sights of the city but it was not a full view of the entire city because there were some trees and houses blocking the view.  And from where we were, we saw cars passing the roads on the other hill close by and we thought of going there too with hopes to see a better view of the entire city. We headed where those cars where going and we saw a lot of people who were walking along the road uphill and taking pictures while enjoying the very nice view, it was for sure the perfect location for the view that we were looking for the whole city.

A very scenic and picturesque view of San Francisco, peaceful and lovely. It was sunny and windy, just so perfect to enjoy the moment of peace and beauty of the place. The Twin Peaks of San Francisco is one of the must visit destination for tourists or locals within the city, best for family or friends outdoor adventure exploration that could be a perfect place for dating couples.

It was my first time to visit these places and I will forever be thankful to God for giving me this opportunity to see all these wonders. Times like this will always be memorable to me.

Is it just me or would this be a place you would visit if you haven’t? I for sure will visit The Twin Peaks again when I get the chance.

  • Alexa In The House

    Alexa In The House

By the kitchen window stands a cylinder shaped speaker, we have had it since 2014. I have to be honest this speaker has been so useful to all of us, I can’t imagine living a whole day without it. I mean that is possible and I’m probably exaggerating but it is one thing that we use daily, it is fun, helpful and entertaining. It is the Amazon Echo but we have changed our wake word to Alexa.

When we got it and placed it on our table, we were skeptical, to us it was just too good to be true. At first we treated it like a toy, we asked Alexa all sorts of question, some she answered and others she just wasn’t yet programed to. As time went by we stopped asking silly questions and we found ourselves asking for time, asked her to set the timer while we were cooking, asked her to play music, asked her to find our phones or we would ask her to quiz the kids and so on. Alexa has so many useful skills that you just have to enable through your app and also she updates automatically so that is never a hassle.

We have Alexa in the kitchen because that is where we gather and that is where she most comes in handy. All you have to do is say “Alexa play music” she will instantly play music from Amazon Prime Music. I personally love asking Alexa to play my favorite song while I’m working around the house, while I’m cooking or reading a book in the living room. The speaker is great because I could listen to Alexa in other rooms in the house, I can even ask her questions too from a long distance if there isn’t any noise on the background.

I have used Alexa countless of times to find my Iphone, I have a terrible memory that is why I had to enable that skill. “Alexa ask lost things to find my Iphone” My phone then vibrates and rings at full volume. It is always a relief to find my phone lying unforgotten either in my bag or under the couch. I do not use my phone that often so I tend to lose it a lot but I am grateful that Alexa is there to save the day. Another thing that I ask Alexa is to remind me to do something. “Alexa remind me to take my lunch to work tomorrow in the morning” I tell her the exact time in the morning that I want her to remind me and she does what she is told to do.

When I’m in the mood I ask Alexa “What’s up” she tells me the weather, time, date and the latest news. I ask Alexa to tell me a joke which most of the time doesn’t crack me up but I do it anyway just for the hell of it. Or I’ll ask Alexa to inspire me to which she’ll read me a famous inspirational quote, it works if she chooses the right quote if not then I ask for another one.

Alexa is a wireless smart speaker that has so many skills, although we don’t use all of them except the ones that we think can be useful. Alexa can do so many simple things and I think a tinge of help around sometimes is never a bad thing. We’ve had this speaker for 3 years now and it still functions as the first day that we got it because we never get to touch it, move it or unplug it. All we do is use our voice to to ask it to do something and that is it.

What do you think? Do you have an Amazon Alexa and what are some of your favorite skills?

  • Sunflower Field, Davis CA

    Sunflower Field, Davis CA

    Sunflower

Field of Sunflowers in Davis California

I am a huge lover of flowers and that Flower Farm had always been one of my dream bucket list place to go to. This past week we went to Sacramento and while on our way, passing by the roads of Davis we saw a beautiful blooming field of sunflowers. I felt so amazed with the stunning yellow colors brightly shining under the sun’s heat in the widest field. My husband knew how I loved flowers so to satisfy my excitement he explored the road and drove into a rocky trail going to the field. We passed through a train railroad and in a few more distance there was an open gate with a sign board saying “Private, No Trespassing”.

To my surprise, without hesitation my husband just continued driving breaking in into the property closer to the field of flowers.stop sign at railroad            I saw the charming scenery of the field just a few steps away from where we parked. I had the spark of joy that delighted my eyes when I saw the blooming field of bright yellow shades from the big flowers.

Me and the sunflower            It was amazing to see how these flowers grew together so tall and bloom as big as they can in a very hot season. It was noon time, a perfect timing of summer which I believed was the sunflower’s fullest peak blossom. It stood high and swayed with the blowing wind. I had the urge and excitement to see the flowers up close but I was reluctant to do so because of the bees that were swarming around, here I realized that bees were very common to sunflower farms. Though I was hesitant I still took my steps towards the flowers and with my very supportive husband he guided me to get so close to a single flower.

Sunflowers view             It was my first time to have seen how big sunflowers can grow and measure how tall its stems could reach. It was simply a wonderful experience, we had fun taking some videos and photographs and enjoyed watching the bees that buzzed around each flower.

Sunflowers + me It was a hot day but indeed a very worth the risk experience.

Sunflowers Davis            Though being mindful that we had just taken the chance of breaking in into the private property, we allowed ourselves to enjoy together the lovely moment of being in a very beautiful place like this. My happiness to achieve one of my dream bucket list was fulfilled by my loving husband and it was a very memorable moment for the two of us together that will surely last a lifetime.

If you are looking for some outdoor adventure, why not try to visit such a lovely place of flower farms like a sunflower field. It’s one way to take a break from the normal routine and usual environment. A great walk along the beautiful flowers will relax your mind and it’s a fun way to at least enjoy a moment of peace and appreciate nature’s beauty.

Have you been in a flower farm or flower field and had the same experience or experience more fun than we did? Let us know where, we would appreciate to hear the story of your experience.

  • Learning Something From Dad

    Learning Something From Dad

At dawn, the sun rose and I heard a knock on my bedroom door. It was mom reminding me that it was time to wake up and get dressed for work. It was my first day going to work with dad after a long time. I knew it was going to be challenging since I knew little next to nothing about painting. Yes, dad is a house painter and just now and then he takes us to work with him. This usually means having to wake up really early in the morning and stop by at Starbucks to grab a drink and a bite to eat before embarking off to the start of a working day.

Dad owns a van where all his painting tools and materials are well kept and he has EVERY material possible to get a job done: rollers that vary in sizes, paint brushes that vary in size as well, paint sprayer machines, paint drop cloth and a bunch of tapes that also come in different colors and a lot of other things that I get to familiarize myself with by the end of the day.

When we got to the customers house I was left with awe when I looked at how big and beautiful the house was and I had no doubt that the inside would look stunning too. The house was vacant and as we walked inside we could hear our footsteps echo. This is why I like coming to work with dad because I get a glimpse of this wonderful place and most of all I get to marvel at dad as he brings it back to life. It could be easily intimidating, the amount of work that needed to be done considering the size of the house but dad looked determined to get to it for that is what he had promised his customer.

I have learned that a painter’s job is never easy because there is a lot of preparation that needs to be done before he can start rolling the the walls or spraying the ceiling. Fixtures get covered or mounted down so that paint is not splattered on them, the outlet covers are removed and the plugs are covered with tape so that it doesn’t get painted and damaged when the painter starts rolling the walls and the floor gets covered too for the same reason. I get to help with some of the minor preparations with dad’s instructions, I handle everything with care and cautious. Depending on how big the project is the preparation could take some time. Dad is very meticulous when it comes to his job, he is so dedicated because he loves to leave his customers happy after he is done with the job. He prioritizes that and that’s not hard to tell. With each passing hours we make progress, dad goes back and forth, room to room filling holes, applying caulk where it is needed and climbing ladders to get to the ceiling before we can move on with the colors.

The owners were particularly careful selecting the colors for their new house. It is easy to go wrong when it comes to choosing colors that is why dad always advices his customers to take their time customizing the colors to their liking. By the time we got to the house the owners had already sent us a list of paint colors that they had chosen and dad had them all ready. So right after all the preparation are done dad goes through the listing of colors and labels the lid of the paint cans and places them to the designated room. For instance, he leaves the can of paint in the bedroom that contains the color that that room will be painted with and he repeats that same step for all the other rooms. I work on a specific task that dad gives me which most of the time is a simple one and after I am done with it I let him know so that he can inspect it. He tells me when I do something wrong ant teaches me the right way to do it.

Once everything is set to go dad gets all his painting materials ready, this is the part where I usually get to do nothing except pass him his tools, bring them to him when he is up the ladder where he cannot reach it. Dad paints a room, two rooms and he makes it look easy with every paint brush stroke. He can cut perfect lines where a color meets the white ceiling. He does this with focus and seriousness as if his life depended on it and that is how he does everything that he cares about.

Dad is the boss, he will leave a job site at the end of the day only when he is satisfied with what he has achieved and the progress he has made. But before we can leave the house we clean, sweep the floor and gather up all of the tools because he likes it all neat and ready for the next day. He does not like a house in a messy state, he does not like to see all the trash piled up.  Dad closes the door and locks it, we get in the van and head home.

This is my experience helping the man I love the most and I would love to know your experience helping your parents with any task.

  • Our First Pet

    Our First Pet

We never thought of getting a pet before. A few months ago, our life was quite hectic; we were always busy working and taking care of important family stuff. A pet was definitely the last thing we thought about. I am not an expert about life but one thing that I’ve learned so far is that it can surprise you when you least expect it, it could change your plans unexpectedly and direct you to a totally different direction and suddenly realize that you’ve made some choices that you would have never done before, either because you were always pessimist about it or you thought that it just wasn’t the right time.

I remember waking up one morning from a lot of scratching and pounding on the door of my room and quite a lot of whining too. It was probably around 4am, I opened my eyes and walked to the door to find Rio standing there staring up at me as to say “can you let me in please, that room over there is so dark and lonely for a fragile pup like me”.  I tell you, you can never say no to that adorable face like a child pouting wanting you to do something for them. In the first place, we were reluctant leaving him alone in the living room, it was his first night in the house and it is obviously normal for him to feel alone, he wanted company. To a pup our house was probably a maze, he felt uneasy. This was not the house he had slept in the night before, the people living in there were strangers. It was overwhelming for him, all these changes happening so fast and so sudden. Honestly It was overwhelming for us too. I stood there looking at him not knowing what to do, I was so sure he had woken everyone up and at any moment they could change their mind about him.

Rio is a Pitbull lab mix; he’s got black fur and a strip of white on his chest. He was only 9 weeks old when we adopted him from the shelter. His name originally was Pistachio but the lady that fostered him named him Rio. “Rio” was simple and easy to say so we went along with it. We had never had a dog before let alone adopt one. The adoption process was a new thing to us, we had no idea about the papers that needed to be filled up. We thought it was just showing up at the shelter, pointing out the pup that you wanted to get and that was it. As ridiculous as that might sound that’s how naïve we were but we were new pet owners, what can you expect, Right?. I kind of wished we had done some research before digging ourselves deeper into the situation as to be aware of what to expect. I sort of did some research on the internet prior to deciding whether continuing with the plan of getting a pup but most of it was like “is it a good idea getting a pup?’ or “what do you like about dogs?” that sort of thing to convince myself that it was indeed a good idea getting one. All the articles I found outlined the positive and negative sides of having a pup. The positives always outshined the negatives until finally I realized that I was absolutely sure that that is what I wanted, what WE wanted and what we needed.

When we got to the shelter however, we were asked to fill up some papers, the adoption application. Basically, asking about our household size, if we had a backyard and if it was fenced, where we lived, what kind of dog we were looking for etc. In the last sheet of the paper, they asked us what kind of dog we were looking for, what characteristics to be specific. They wanted to find the perfect match for every type of family because selecting the right dog for you was crucial to both the family’s and the pup’s happiness. We checked a few boxes on the paper that said friendly, energetic, playful, perfect for new owners. We submitted the application and a while later they told us that we had qualified and that they had found a perfect match!. So they introduced us to Rio and he captured our heart immediately. He was super hyper and friendly and he wasn’t shy at all. He walked towards us and sniffed us with his tail wiggling all over the place. We looked at each other and nodded. This is the one no doubt about it. Before leaving the shelter, they gave us one last paper to fill which was the Rescue Adoption Agreement in which you had to promise to take care of your pup, never to mistreat him and give him a loving home. We agreed and signed. It had been a long and exhausting day; we had spent all morning getting everything prepared for our new puppy. We had bought him toys, a crate and blankets and we had spent almost the whole afternoon at the shelter.

Sweet Rio had finally become a member of the family. We settled him in the living room which at the time was ideal because that is where we spent most of our time and Rio wouldn’t feel so lonely but at night it was inevitable for him to feel alone. We all would go to sleep in our bedrooms and he would immediately start whining and scratching at the door. As first pet owners we felt sorry for him, although we were advised to ignore his whining because all he wanted was attention and if we gave in to it he would continue doing it every time, we couldn’t take it. So we brought his crate in our bedroom and let him sleep there next to us. He would fall asleep right away and the snoring would begin, yes Rio snores and he snores a lot. Occasionally he would have nightmares and whimper in his dreams. He would start to tremble and we would try to shake him awake until he’d open his eyes and stare startled at us not knowing where he was. We really got to know him well for the first few days. We learned that we needed to take him out potty twice at night which was very unpleasant for us because we weren’t used to it but no matter how much we despised the idea of waking up in the middle of the night we knew it was important or else our little buddy would start wondering in the room until he’d find a nice spot to do his business in. He’d do this during the day too if whenever we’d forget to take him outside which most of the time we did. In the beginning it was all cool but as time progressed it became a hard task, having to take him outside and cleaning up poo and pee. We started to potty train him but nothing worked because he would still do it in the house instead of going outside. At some point we thought he’d never learn.

Rio would make a big mess inside, he would chew on anything he’d find. Chew on you’re lovely fluffy slippers that were on your feet, he would try to snatch them off and half rip them into pieces and he would nibble on your fingers just hard enough to hurt. He was only playing of course but it became irritating. By this time we were almost on the verge of giving up on him, we had started to regret the choice we had made. It was all too much, he was a lot of work, more than a baby. We started to wonder why we had decided on the idea of having a puppy in our house and our life.

At one point we started to discuss the idea of giving him back, to rehome him. Maybe a more experienced pet owner would be able to take care of him and his needs better than we can. There was always a pang in my heart every time we brought up the conversation. We had gone through tougher situation though not really relevant to this one, it showed that we could endure anything. True, Rio was a rambunctious pup but all he needed was some time to learn and it was all up to us.

Dogs are precious creatures, they require a lot of patience and a lot of work but trust me the results are very rewarding. We trained rio to the best of our abilities, we taught him to sit, stay and lay. To our surprise he learned pretty quickly but there was still one thing that he wasn’t catching on with, he would still pee and poo inside the house. Every time he did it we would just shake our heads in dismay and mildly scold him. What we decided to do is get a bell and hung it on the door knob, we trained him to ring the bell every time he wanted to go outside. It took some time but he caught on.

Rio has improved immensely, all the time that we have spent on training him has not been in vain because he has made so much progress and we couldn’t be happier with the result. It feels good to come home and have him staring out the window with his tail wiggling, it feels good to have him welcome us with so much joy and you just can’t help but smile even when you’ve had a tough day. I love watching him run around in the backyard, how sometimes he would bring out his favorite toy waiting for me to grab it from him so we can play fetch. He loves it when you hug him, he definitely understand it when you’re in need of one. Rio has been a perfect addition to the family and although we wavered on the idea of having him in the beginning there is absolutely no doubt in our hearts now that we made the right decision in keeping him. It’s true, life will surprise you with little adventures like this. Dogs fill in a hollow in our hearts, a hollow we never knew existed until they come along and show us a kind of love and devotion we had been longing for.

Fiance K1 Visa Application (October 2016)

My K1 Visa Application: October 2016

    Stey-by-step Process Experience

A fiancé visa is considered a K1 nonimmigrant visa type but in some cases, it can be considered as an immigrant type in some steps of the process. For instance, on the day of your interview appointment at the consulate you’ll be asked to fall in line to the immigrant area when you are a k1 applicant and separated from the nonimmigrant visa type applicants. It is important to have an overview of the visa type you want to apply to and know the first steps to take and what goes through after each process. Upon doing some research we found the U.S Department of State, Bureau of Consular Affairs website travel.state.gov, typed in fiancé and directed us to the information we needed.

The first step is filing the petition; As a U.S citizen sponsor/petitioner, N as my fiancé filled up the form I-129F Petition for an Alien Fiance from the website of U.S Citizenship and Immigration Services www.uscis.gov which where you’ll be directed by the first website when you clicked into that form.

REMEMBER: Download all the forms from the USCIS website because all the forms were updated per year and this is the legal website that contains all the necessary information for all U.S visa type application.

Before filing the petition, we have completed the required documents such as: individual form G-325A Biographic Information, form G-1145 E-Notification of Application/Petition Acceptance, individual photographs, a copy of my fiance’s proof of citizenship, individual letter or original statement of intent to marry and photos as proof that we have met in person within 2 years before filing the form.

There are other requirements that applies to different case as fiancé so be sure to read the special instructions on how to fill up the form and important details available on the website. With these requirements, he filed the form together with the filing fee to USCIS and we waited for the approval of our petition and it took more than 2 weeks until we received our I-797 Notice of Action/Approval Notice, Nov.02,2016.

From the USCIS I-797 approval notice we received, we tracked our petition application status through USCIS website https://egov.uscis.gov/casestatus/landing.do using the provided receipt number. Our approved petition from USCIS was then sent to the National Visa Center (NVC). Exactly a month after, Dec.02,2016 we received a letter from the National Visa Center that they have received our petition from USCIS and stated that they will now forward our petition to the U.S embassy or consulate in Manila and the process will take several weeks.

Based to the NVC letter we received, NVC will send an email to me as the fiancé to inform me of the specific requirements I should prepare before scheduling an appointment of interview that would also mean that the consulate in Manila has already received our petition. But weeks have passed and I never received an email. However, as we tracked our case status online from the USCIS website we knew that the consulate in Manila already got our petition so I started to comply with the specific requirements for the interview. The required documentation is also enumerated from the website http://nvc.state.gov/k1

The second step is applying for a visa; I, the applicant and fiancé of a U.S citizen have process all the required documentation before the interview. While I am processing all the requirements I have called through their call center to set a schedule for appointment interview. The requirements I needed before scheduling an appointment is just the same with the first steps of application I made when I applied for a tourist visa before.  I paid the K1 visa fee to the BPI bank and filed the DS-160 form online. It was December 15, 2016 that I received my interview appointment confirmation through email scheduled on December 22,2016 at 7:30 a.m. Note that scheduling an appointment can also be done online, you can choose of whatever option that is more convenient for you.

    *Required Documentation before the interview:

    1. Passport valid for travel- make sure that its not yet expired and valid at least six months or more of your intended period of stay in U.S. I checked mine and its still valid until year 2019.

    2. Completed form DS-160 and Confirmation Page print out- After submission of the form online I printed the copy of the confirmation page and kept it for the day of my interview.

    3. Divorce/Death Certificate- this is if you or your fiancé/sponsor got any previous marriages before so this does not apply to us.

    4. Police Certificate- To make sure of what to bring I applied for two certificates, NBI clearance certificate and Police Clearance Certificate.

    5. Evidence of Relationship- this includes photos of us together on scrapbooks and albums, letters, emails, messages on messenger (the usual means of our conversation), summary of bank accounts where he used to send me money, receipts of our travel together, invoices of our online mobile balances we spent talking by phone, receipts of the packages we received from each other and all the proof of evidences I could provide I prepared it in case.

    6. Evidence of financial support-  all the required documents were done by my fiancé and he sent me copies of it so I can bring it to the interview as proof of evidence that he can support me financially when I arrive in U.S.

He filled up the latest version of form I-134 Affidavit of Support from the website www.uscis.gov and send me a copy of it for my records. Aside from I-134 form he also sent me copies of his bank statement of account with deposits, his recent filed Income Tax Return, W-2 form and recent pay stubs from his employer.

REMEMBER: Keep your copy of the Affidavit of Support for it will be included to the documents that the U.S immigration requires upon arrival and entry.

    7. Medical Examination-  full details are stated in the official website of USCIS travel.state.gov and St.Luke’s Medical Center Extension Clinic website http://www.slec.ph/us-visa-applicants.shtml.

As a K1 visa applicant I got my checklist of the requirements prior to my medical examination from the official website of St.Luke’s. First step I made was to register online on the same website. I completed the registration with the following information: Case information (details can be found on the NVC letter we received after our petition approval from USCIS), my detail information as the applicant and my petitioner’s information or my fiancé’s information. I printed out the copy of my online registration confirmation form as it was one of the requirements for my medical exam.

Next step was to complete the other requirements and provide photocopies for each of them. These are the following: valid passport, copy of passport biographic data page, letter with case number (from NVC letter), interview appointment confirmation from U.S embassy and 4 pcs. Recent 2x2 visa photo’s.

REMEMBER: There are additional other instructions which apply for a different K1 visa applicant case like for example applicants applying with their kids as their derivative or applicants with previous marriages. There are also more additional documents that you may bring on the day of your medical exam if its available and applicable for your case. Make sure to read all necessary information and instruction on the website for your complete requirements. This blog is for the requirements and procedures of a k1 visa applicant only without any derivative or kids.

After completing all the processes in the medical examination for 2 consecutive days, with my passport and the receipt that St.Luke's Clinic provided, I claimed the sealed envelope packet that contains my medical examination records which I presented to the consulate officer on the day of my interview.

    8. Passport Photos (2 pcs. 2x2 photographs)

    9. Payment Fees

    December 22,2016 at 7:30 a.m, Interview Day
With my ever supportive Mama, we traveled early in the morning going to the U.S Embassy for my interview. I brought all the required documents with me compiled in a clear book, well organized to ensure that I have all the necessary documents and proofs that the consulate might ask.

It was a consulate officer who was a foreign white young man with very decent look who called me in the line for my actual interview.  He greeted me politely, asked for all the necessary documents and some questions about my fiance and a little background of our love story. With all those simple questions, he continued checking my documents and after he had done through all of it, he finally congratulated me for being approved with my K1 visa application. He then informed me that my visa will be sent directly to my given address for 10 working days.

I got so happy that after 3 months of preparing and processing all the documents, it was all worth it.

Before the year of 2016 ended, I have received the packet from U.S Embassy which contains my passport with the visa and the sealed packet of my documents and my medical records.
